LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - International competition began today at the 2014 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp. USA Blue pulled out a 2-1 victory against Finland with goals from Louie Belpedio (Skokie, Ill./U.S National Under-18 Team) and Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich./U.S National Under-18 Team). USA White fell short against Sweden, 4-3. USA White's Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz./U.S. National Under-17 Team) tallied two goals, and Anthony Louis (Winfield, Ill./Miami University) also scored.

Thanks to a 7-year-old girl who told Lego its toys are boring, the company has created a female scientist set. The new set has figurines that study dinosaurs, map the stars, and perform lab experiments. Lego says the kit was created by actual geophysicist Ellen Kooijman.

1956 - William Herz became the first person to race a motorcycle over 200 miles per hour. He was clocked at 210 mph. 

1957 - Juan Fangio won his final auto race and captured the world auto driving championship. It was his the fifth consecutive year to win. 

1983 - New York Yankee outfielder Dave Winfield threw a baseball during warm-ups and accidentally killed a seagull. After the game, Toronto police arrested him for "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal." 

1984 - Carl Lewis won a gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympics. 

1985 - Tom Seaver (Chicago White Sox) achieved his 300th victory. 

1985 - Rod Carew (California Angels) got his 3,000th major league hit. 

1986 - The United States Football League called off its 1986 season. This was after winning only token damages in its antitrust lawsuit against the National Football League.

An Illinois man is accused of trying to kill his female roommate. Allen Hall of Decatur, Illinois, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated domestic battery. Police allege that Hall turned angry when he learned his roommate ate three Chips Ahoy! cookies for breakfast.

Guardian of the Galaxy has turned a motley band of space criminals into box office gold. The opening weekend take for the Marvel movie destroyed the previous August record for the United States and brought in big bucks from overseas theaters as well. Guardians of the Galaxy was expected to earn around $65 million domestically for its opening weekend - instead it made $94 million. Globally Guardians pulled in $160 million.
