SOCHI, Russia – Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored and goaltender Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) turned away eight shots, but the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team fell to Russia, 2-1, in its final preliminary-round game of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games at Shayba Arena.
"I can't criticize my team at all," said Jeff Sauer, head coach of the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. "I thought we played as well as we can play. We put a lot of pressure on. I thought we dominated play for the majority of the game and just a couple of bad breaks went against us and that was the difference in the game."
Team USA will play Canada in the Paralympic semifinals Thursday (March 13) at 8:00 p.m. ET. NBC Sports Network will televise the game live.
Despite the U.S. holding an 11-4 edge in shots on goal in the opening period, Russia scored first at 11:57 on a five-on-three power play. Russia expanded its lead to 2-0 when a rebound hit a U.S. player in front and bounced into the net at 2:37 of the second stanza.
Page pulled Team USA to within a goal at 4:50 of the third period when he batted a rebound over Russian goaltender Vladimir Kamantcev from the edge of the crease. After the United States won a faceoff, Nikko Landeros (Johnstown, Colo.) weaved his way into the offensive zone and through the left circle. Once there, he fired a shot that Kamantcev knocked up the middle and right to Page to flip over his glove. Andy Yohe (Bettendorf, Iowa) collected the second assist on the play.
The United States appeared to tie the score when Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) unloaded a shot from the high slot, but the tally was waived off when the referee ruled a U.S. player had interfered with Kamantcev.
Team USA finished the game with a 23-10 advantage in shots on goal, including a 7-2 edge in the third period.
The U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team completed the preliminary round in second place of Group B with a 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

Fifty-Two of the Top 1998-Born Players Invited to Ann Arbor

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Fifty-two of the top American hockey players born in 1998 have been invited to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program Evaluation Camp it was announced today by team officials. The camp, which will help select the 2014-15 U.S. National Under-17 Team, will take place March 21-25, at the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube.
"We're excited to welcome another talented crop of players to our tryout camp," said Peter Ward, director of player personnel for the NTDP. "The entire scouting staff puts in days, months and years of hard work to identify what we believe are the nation's top players in this age group."
The 52 players, including 19 defensemen, 27 forwards and six goaltenders, will be divided into three teams - Red, White and Blue. The squads will participate in on-ice practices and off-ice training as well as four 30-minute practice sessions and two full games.
NTDP alumni Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn./2004-06), Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich./2004-05) andDavid Tanabe (White Bear Lake, Minn./1997-98) will serve as coaches at the camp. In addition, NTDP intern assistant coaches Josh Brown and Dan Naurato will also work behind the bench.

NOTES: The 52 players on the NTDP Evaluation Camp roster represent 17 different states. Minnesota leads the way with 12 natives on the roster, while Michigan is second with eight. Illinois and Missouri each boast six players followed closely by New York (4) ... Blake Geoffrion earned the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 2010 as the top player in college hockey while skating with the University of Wisconsin. Prior to his time as a Badger, Geoffrion represented the U.S. with the NTDP, helping Team USA to a gold medal at the 2006 World Under-18 Championship. Geoffrion also appeared in two World Junior Championships (2007-08), capturing bronze in 2007 ... Kyle Lawson played in four seasons with the University of Notre Dame (2006-10). Before his days with the Fighting Irish, Lawson was a member of the gold-medal winning U.S. National Under-18 Team in 2005. The defenseman would go on to serve as alternate captain during Team USA's bronze-medal finish at the 2007 World Junior Championship ... David Tanabe was among the inaugural group of athletes to train at the NTDP in Ann Arbor, Mich., during the 1997-98 season. Tanabe was drafted in the first round by Carolina in 1999 and became the first NTDP alumnus to play in the NHL. He played in 449 NHL games with Carolina, Phoenix and Boston.
ABOUT THE NTDP: In 1996, USA Hockey launched a new initiative called the National Team Development Program, based in Ann Arbor, Mich. Celebrating its 17th season of play in 2013-14, the goal of this full-time development program is to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. Its efforts focus not only on high-caliber participation on the ice, but creating well-rounded individuals off the ice.
