Wenatchee, WA. – The Wenatchee Wild hosted the Kenai River Brown Bears in the second of a three-game set at the Town Toyota Center Saturday night and it was a two-goal first period for the visitors that provided the difference, as the Brown Bears beat Wenatchee 3-1, in front of 2,537 fans.
Kenai River took the lead at 11:33 of the opening period, scoring on a delayed penalty. Alec Butcher scored from Albin Karlsson and Tyler Andrews, putting the Brown Bears on top, 1-0. Kenai River would increase the lead with a power play goal not quite four minutes later. Andrews was credited with the goal, with assists going to Sebastian Fuchs and Karlsson at 15:26.
The Wild got on the board just shy of the 8 minute mark of the second period on a power play goal by David Powlowski (Rochester, New York), assisted by Matthew Nuttle (Roseville, Minnesota) at 7:49, cutting the Brown Bear lead to 2-1. The lead went back to two goals on a power play goal at 10:28 by Kenai River’s Andrews, with assists going to Butcher and Karlsson, giving Kenai River a 3-1 lead.
In the third period, Wenatchee, aided by three power plays, outshot the Brown Bears by a nearly 2 to 1 margin, but weren’t able to find the back of the net, as Kenai River held on for the 3-1 win. “You know, we’re playing well” said Wenatchee Wild Head Coach Bliss Littler. “The first goal and the third goal were killers; we didn’t make them work that hard to score. They’re a veteran team, they don’t make a lot of mistakes, they get very good goaltending, so we have to get to the front of the net and try and create some second chances to get it past their kid.”
The Wild outshot the Brown Bears on the night, 34-25. Mackenzie Sawyer (Landsdowne, Canada) stopped 22 shots for Wenatchee, while Zach Quinn made 33 saves for Kenai River. The Wild were 1-for-9 on the power play and 6-of-8 on the penalty kill.
The Wild is now 5-7-2, Kenai River is 11-3-0.
The series against the Kenai River Brown Bears concludes tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, starting at 5:05pm PDT. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs come to town on Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd, with both games slated to start at 7:05pm PDT. Individual and group game tickets for all home games are on sale now. Wenatchee, WA. – The Wenatchee Wild hosted the Kenai River Brown Bears in the third of a three-game set at the Town Toyota Center Sunday night and it was the Brown Bears who would prevail, thanks to a goal late in regulation, 4-3, in front of 2,158 fans.
Ryan Gotelaere (Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin) opened the scoring, coming off the bench to take the puck and score on a shot up high. Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) and Parker Tuomie (Biemerhaven, Germany) assisted at 8:05, giving the Wild a 1-0 lead. Trey Bradley (Tampa, Florida), hanging around the goal crease, banged one home just over 3 minutes later on a goal mouth scramble. River Rymsha (Huntington Woods, Michigan) and Loggins assisted at 11:16, putting Wenatchee up 2-0.
18 seconds into period two, Alec Butcher scored for Kenai River, assisted by Zack Zulkanycz, cutting the Wild lead down to 2-1.
Zulkanycz scored a shorthanded goal in the third period for the Brown Bears to tie the game off a 2-on-1 break. The goal, assisted by Steven Butts at 3:40, tied the game 2-2. Nathan Colwell would give his team the lead at 13:51, on a spin around shot from below the right circle. Albin Karlsson and Christian Luiten assisted, for a 3-2 lead Kenai River lead. However, Wenatchee would bounce back on the power play to tie the game. Chris Jones (Normandy Park, Washington) tapped it home, assisted by Chris Koukis (Brentwood, California) and Gotelaere at 16:11, tying the game 3-3. Just as it appeared the game would be headed to overtime, Karlsson scored for the Brown Bears to make it 4-3, assisted by Zulkanycz and Butcher at 18:22. Kenai River would hold on from there, to take the 4-3 win. “There are lots of positives over the three games” said Wenatchee Wild Head Coach Bliss Littler. “All three games we had
our chances. We’ve got to do a better job so their save percent isn’t 94%. We’ve got to do a better job of playing defense so that our save percent isn’t 86%.”
The Wild outshot the Brown Bears 39-24. Chase Perry (Andover, Minnesota) made 20 saves for Wenatchee; Kris Oldham had 36 stops for Kenai River. The Wild was 1-for-5 with a shorthanded goal against. They were 5-of-5 on the penalty kill.
The Wild is now 5-8-2, Kenai River is 12-3-0.
The Fairbanks Ice Dogs come to town on Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd, with both games slated to start at 7:05pm PDT. Then, it’s the Michigan Warriors for two on Friday and Saturday, November 8th and 9th, with face off both nights at 7:05pm PST. Individual and group game tickets for all home games are on sale now. Lou Reed, lead singer of the Velvet Underground, has died at the age of 71. Reed died on Sunday morning in Southampton, New York, of an illness related to a liver transplant.
