U.S. National Under-17 Team Rolls Over Finland, 5-1,
at 2013 Five Nations Tournament

JARVENPAA, Finland - Blake Weyrick (Ojai, Calif.) turned aside 24 shots, as the U.S. National Under-17 Team rolled over Finland, 5-1, at the 2013 Five Nations Tournament here today at Jarvenpaa Arena. With the victory, Team USA finishes with a record of 2-0-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earns third place.
"We continued to play better as the tournament progressed," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "Although we had the ultimate goal of claiming the title, it was a great experience for the guys."
Alex Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored just 22 seconds in the first frame to give Team USA an early lead. Ryan Bliss(Bedford, N.H.) and Joe Wegwerth (Brewster, N.Y.) collected assists on the tally. Finland knotted the game, 1-1, at 8:38. The U.S. responded when Anders Bjork (Mequon, Wis.) lit the lamp at 12:09. Sonny Milano (Massapequa, N.Y.) registered the lone assist. Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) put the Americans up by two goals when he found the back of the net at 15:50. Nolan Stevens (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Seamus Malone (Naperville, Ill.) assisted.
The U.S. tallied the only goal of the second stanza at 2:21 when Milano took a Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass.) pass and buried it into the net. Team USA outshot Finland, 12-6, in the frame.
Team USA and Finland each put 10 shots on net in the third frame. After the U.S. was whistled for a penalty late in the period, Finland pulled its netminder in favor of the extra attacker. The gamble did not pay off as Larkin potted an empty net goal for the Americans at 3:36. Eichel earned an assist on the play.
Weyrick kicked out 24 shots in the win for Team USA, while Kaapo Kahkonen made 31 saves in the loss for Finland.

U.S. National Under-18 Team Defeats Sweden, 3-2,
in Overtime at 2013 Five Nations Tournament

JONKOPING, Sweden - Evan Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored in overtime, as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated Sweden, 3-2, at the 2013 Five Nations Tournament here today at Kinnarps Arena. With the victory, Team USA finishes with a record of 1-1-0-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earns fourth place.
"We battled hard and showed a lot of character in today's win," said Don Granato, head coach of the U.S. National Under-18 Team. "This tournament will help serve as a learning experience as we fine tune our team heading into the final stages of the USHL season and the Under-18 World Championship in April."
Anthony Louis (Winfield, Ill.) netted the first goal of the game at 8:06 of the opening frame. Tyler Kelleher(Longmeadow, Mass.) registered the lone assist on the score. The U.S. outshot Sweden, 23-5, in the period.
Sweden notched back-to-back goals, one on the power play, in the second stanza to gain the edge over the Americans. Team USA fired 15 shots on Swedish netminder Jonas Johansson, but was unable to find the game-tying goal before time expired on the frame.
J.T. Compher (Northbrook, Ill.) put the puck into the net at 9:55 to tie the game, 2-2. U.S. goaltender Evan Cowley(Evergreen, Colo.) turned aside all nine shots he faced to send the game into overtime.
Team USA put two shots on net in the extra period, while holding Sweden to none. Allen scored at 1:06 to send the U.S. away victorious, 3-2.
Cowley made 21 saves in the win for the Americans, while Johansson made 48 saves in the overtime loss for Sweden.

Sixth Annual Hockey Weekend Across America, Presented by CCM, Starts Friday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The sixth annual Hockey Weekend Across America presented by CCM, will be celebrated across the United States Feb. 15-17.
"Hockey Weekend Across America has become a staple on the hockey calendar in our country," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Not only is it a time to celebrate the game and those involved at all levels, but it also gives us a chance to share this great sport with those who may not have had the chance to enjoy it previously."
 Each of the three days of Hockey Weekend Across America has a theme, including Wear Your Favorite Hockey Jersey, sponsored by ShopUSAHockey.com on Friday; Try Hockey Day, sponsored by the National Hockey League on Saturday; and Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes on Sunday.
The HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com website contains a list of activities across the country for hockey fans and players to get involved in. A sampling of the hundreds of registered events are below.
"Wear Your Favorite Jersey Day" on Friday (Feb. 15) is the day for fans to show off their hockey pride by wearing their prized hockey jerseys. Fans are encouraged to submit their photos to USA Hockey's Facebook and Twitter pages. Use the hashtag #HWAA for Twitter posts.
On Saturday (Feb. 16), some 200 rinks nationwide will host "Try Hockey for Free" clinics, allowing thousands of children to experience hockey for the first time. Visit HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com for more details or to find a rink near you hosting an event.
To cap off the weekend, "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes" day on Sunday (Feb. 17) encourages hockey programs nationwide to develop ways to honor their local hockey heroes. USA Hockey invites all to post stories about their hockey hero on HockeyWeekendAcrossAmerica.com.
Sunday also features NBC's Hockey Day in America coverage, which includes an NHL doubleheader on NBC (Buffalo at Pittsburgh; Los Angeles at Chicago) and coverage of a third NHL game that evening on NBC Sports Network (Washington at New York Rangers). Along with its game coverage, NBC will also produce content in and around the games showcasing hockey at all levels in the United States.
Now through Feb. 17 fans can enter the Hockey Weekend Across America "Pick Six Sweepstakes" to win one of three grand prizes -- the choice of six of 12 CCM products, including a hockey stick, hockey gloves, helmet/facemask combo, hockey pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, hockey bag, elbow pads, winter jacket, mini-hockey set, sports bag or golf bag. NHL Network U.S. will air special programming during Hockey Weekend Across America. On Sunday, the 2013 U.S. National Junior Team's three-game playoff run to the gold medal will be shown at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. ET.
NOTES: Hockey Weekend Across America was created by USA Hockey in 2008 to engage the hockey community in celebrating the sport of hockey at all levels and exposing the sport to new audiences ... The Fairbanks Hockey Hall of Fame is holding a Hockey Extravaganza on Feb. 16 where there will be a day of hockey at the Big Dipper Ice Arena.
Rochester, New York
The Rochester Americans have promotions on Feb. 15 and 17. On Feb. 15, any fan wearing their favorite jersey can purchase a best available ticket for $12. On Feb. 17, free admission is offered to all youth and high school hockey players.
Oxnard, California
On Feb. 16, the Channel Islands Youth Hockey League invites kids aged 5-10 to a Try Hockey for Free clinic at Channel Islands Ice Center.

On Feb. 16, the KC Fighting Saints are hosting Try Hockey For Free at Line Creek Community Center from 4:10-5:10 p.m., with public skating to follow from 2-4 p.m.

On Feb. 16, the Connecticut Whale is offering lower level end zone seats for $10 to youth hockey players wearing their team jersey.

On Feb. 16, the Des Moines High School League will host Pink in the Rink Night as all players will wear pink jerseys. Proceeds will go to breast cancer research.

Thursday, Feb. 14Jeff Sauer, head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. Sauer was the men's ice hockey head coach at both Colorado College (1971-80) and the University of Wisconsin (1983-2002). At UW he won a pair of NCAA national championships (1983, 1990).
Friday, Feb. 15Ron DeGregorio, president of USA Hockey since 2003. He has been involved with USA Hockey since 1973 and is a recipient of the the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to hockey in the U.S.
