USA Hockey Announces Coaching Staffs For Winter World University Games Teams COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Scott Balboni (State College, Pa.) and Mo Stroemel (State College, Pa.) have been named head coaches for the U.S. Men's and Women's National University Teams it was announced today by USA Hockey. The squads will participate in the 2013 Winter World University Games, set for Dec. 11-21, 2013, in Trentino, Italy. "We couldn't be more pleased to have Scott and Mo lead our teams," said Ashley Bevan, senior director of adult hockey at USA Hockey, who will serve as team leader of the 2013 Men's and Women's National University Teams. "Together with the outstanding assistant coaches that will assist them, we're excited about the staffs we have guiding our country in the Winter World University Games later this year." Balboni, who guided the Penn State University men's ice hockey club team from 2006-11, will serve as head coach for the 2013 U.S. Men's National University Team. He was named the ACHA Men’s Division I National Coach of the Year in 2007 after his squad finished as national runner-up and compiled a .781 winning percentage. A two-time (2007-08, 2009-10) Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League Coach of the Year, Balboni has twice previously served as an assistant coach at both the 2009 Winter World University Games in Harbin, China, and the 2011 Winter World University Games in Erzurum, Turkey. Dan Phelps (Livonia, Mich.) and Sean Hogan (Tucson, Ariz.) will serve as assistant coaches under Balboni.  Phelps, in his fifth season as head coach of Adrian College Bulldogs men's ice hockey team, will return to the U.S. Men's National University Team for the second consecutive time after he served as an assistant coach for Team USA alongside Balboni in 2011. Hogan will be joining the U.S. Men's National University Team for the first time. He is entering his second season as head coach of the men's ice hockey team at the University of Arizona. Stroemel, Wright, Blackburn to lead U.S. Women's National University Team Stroemel returns to lead the 2013 U.S. Women's National University Team, previously serving as head coach for the inaugural 2011 U.S. Women's National University Team which finished in 4th place in Erzurum, Turkey. He is currently the director of hockey operations for the Penn State women's ice hockey program. Stroemel has been with Penn State since 1994, serving in a variety of roles during his 18 seasons, including head coach of the women's ice hockey team (2007-11) and assistant coach of the men's ice hockey team (2004-07). During Stroemel’s three seasons with the men’s team, he helped lead the team to three appearances in the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championship Game. Joining Stroemel as assistant coaches will be Kristen Wright (Broomfield, Colo.) and Rob Blackburn (Whitmore Lake, Mich.). Wright is in her fourth season as head coach of the University of Colorado women's ice hockey team and will be joining the U.S. Women's National University Team for the first time. Blackburn will also serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National University Team for the first time. He is currently in his fifth year as head coach of the University of Michigan women's ice hockey team and has led the Wolverines to the national tournament three times. NOTES: Players for the U.S. Men's and Women's National University Teams are selected from players competing within the ACHA ... The final rosters are expected to be announced in November ... The United States will field a men's ice hockey team in the Winter World University Games for the seventh straight time and a women's ice hockey team for the second Games in a row. Ty Hennes Selected As Regional Manager of American Development Model COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Ty Hennes (Kent, Wash.), who as a player helped the Boston College men’s ice hockey team capture the 2001 NCAA title and has spent the last four years as the director of hockey and head coach of the boys' varsity hockey team at Coppell (Texas) High School, has been named a regional manager of USA Hockey’s American Development Model it was announced today. “We’re excited to welcome Ty to our staff,” said Jim Johannson, assistant executive director for hockey operations at USA Hockey. “His experiences as both as a player and coach will be instrumental in helping us continue our efforts in providing the best possible landscape for youth players nationwide through the ADM.” Hennes served as captain of the boys' varsity hockey team at Deerfield (Mass.) Academy in 1998 and went on to play two seasons (1998-2000) for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League, serving as captain his final season. After his four-year (2000-04) collegiate career at Boston College, Hennes played four seasons of professional hockey (2004-08), including stints with the Toledo Storm and Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL and the Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League. In addition to his coaching experience at Coppell High School, Hennes served for the past six seasons (2006-12) as a head coach for the Alliance Hockey Association in Dallas, Texas, at various levels and helped guide teams to seven USA Hockey National Championship appearances during his tenure. Hennes has been an on-going contributor to USA Hockey in multiple capacities, including serving as a coach for the organization's player development camps and its Rocky Mountain district camps in addition to twice being a presenter at a USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching Clinic. Nominations for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2013 Now Being Accepted COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nominations for the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2013 are now being accepted, USA Hockey announced today. Eligible for nomination is any player, coach, referee, administrator or support personnel who has made an extraordinary contribution to the sport of ice hockey in America. Each nomination will be forwarded to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee for review and the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2013 will be announced later this year. The date and location of the 41st annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Dinner will also be announced at a later date. Authorities in (Coquitlam) British Columbia, Canada, are reminding callers how to use the 911 emergency line. They say some calls to 911 aren't an emergency at all, like the angry man who called after buying a hamster that gave birth to a litter of 10. The man was upset because the store refused to give him a refund and his next call was to 911. Emergency operators have taken calls for everything from chickens crossing the road to bad pizza and even a sasquatch sighting.
