Riders season ends in playoff loss at Calgary









Calgary, AB -- The Saskatchewan Roughriders season came to an end Sunday night in the CFL's Western semifinal, thanks to a 36-30 loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

The Roughriders got on the board first, thanks to a 29 yard field goal by Sandro DeAngelis, with 2 seconds left in the opening quarter, for a 3-0 lead after one.

In the second, Bo Levi Mitchell punched it in from one yard out. Combined with the Rene Paredes convert with 11:53 remaining in the half, for a 7-3 Calgary lead. Drew Tate would then hit Jabari Arthur with a 38 yard TD strike just over 6 minutes later. Paredes booted the convert and with 5:26 to play in the second, the Stamps were up 14-3. Saskatchewan then marched 75 yards in 7 plays for their first major of the game. Kory Sheets scored on an 11 yard pass from Darian Durant and DeAngelis tacked on the convert, cutting the Rider deficit to 14-10 with 2:11 still to play in the opening half. Saskatchewan would reach the endzone again in the final minute, with Durant passing to Sheets for a 3 yard touchdown. Keon Raymond blocked the convert and Fred Bennett would scoop up the bouncing ball and rumble 96 yards the other way for 2 Calgary points and a 16-16 tie with 12 seconds to play in the half. Paredes would then blast a 50 yard field goal with no time showing on the game clock, boosting the Stampeders to a 19-16 halftime lead.

In the third, Calgary expanded the lead to 10, as Mitchell scored his second 1 yard major of the game. The Paredes convert expanded the Stampeder lead to 26-16, with 1:09 to play in the third.

After collecting a Calgary fumble around midfieldhe Roughriders would score on an 8 yard pass play from Durant to Greg Carr. With the DeAngelis convert, the Stampeder lead was down to 26-23 with 8:31 to play in the fourth. Calgary would answer on a 40 yard field goal from Paredes with 1:22 to play for a 29-23 lead. Carr would then catch another scoring strike from Durant, this one from 24 yards out and with the DeAngelis convert, Saskatchewan was on top by 1, at 30-29, with just 52 seconds left in regulation time. However, it just wasn't in the cards for the Green-and-White. Tate would fire a 68 yard catch-and-run scoring strike to Romby Bryant, with just 39 seconds left for the Stamps. After the2 point convert failed, Paredes would blast a 90 yard kickoff single with 20 seconds to play. A last-second pass from the Calgary 51 by Durant was intercepted by Keon Raymond at the one yard line and the clock ran out, giving the Stampeders the 6 point win, 36-30.

For Calgary, Drew Tate was 22-of-36 passing for 363 yards and 2 touchdowns. Maurice Price caught 6 balls for 117 yards, Romby Bryant had 4 receptions for 102 yards and a score and Jabari Arthur caught 2 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Jon Cornish had a big night, running 18 times for 109 yards. Rene Paredes kicked 2 field goals, 3 converts and a kickoff single. Rob Maver punted 8 times for a 42.9 yard average. Juwan Simpson and Fred Bennett led the defence with 5 tackles apiece. For the Roughriders, Darian Durant was 24-of-37 for 435 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He also ran the ball 3 times for 25 yards. Kory Sheets ran the ball just 5 times for 19 yards, but caught 5 passes for 77 yards and 2 majors. Greg Carr had 4 receptions for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns, Weston Dressler had 6 receptions for 153 yards, Sandro DeAngelis kicked 1 field goal and 3 converts, Ricky Schmitt, in his CFL debut, punted 8 times for a 42.8 yard average, while defensively, James Patrick had 9 tackles and a sack and Joe Lobendahn made 7 tackles. The Stampeders had 26 first downs, 123 yards rushing and 363 yards passing, for 484 total yards and were penalized 5 times for 55 yards. They also lost a fumble, intercepted 2 passes and recorded 2 sacks. Saskatchewan had 24 first downs, 61 yards rushing and 435 yards passing for 466 total yards. They lost a fumble, recorded 2 sacks and were penalized 6 times for 58 yards.

With the loss, the Roughriders' season is over. And with the win, the Stampeders move on to the Western Final against the defending Grey Cup Champions, the BC Lions. The game will be played in Vancouver on Sunday, November 18th, at 4:30pm EST. The game can be heard on Team 1040am in Vancouver and on AM 770 in Calgary. The game can be seen in Canada on RDS and TSN and in the U.S. the game can be seen live online on ESPN3.com and on a delayed basis on the NBC Sports Network.
