Riders win Banjo Bowl on final play









Winnipeg, MB. -- Sandro DeAngelis had the last word in the duel of kickers Sunday afternoon, booting a 40 yard field goal on the final play of the game, to boost the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 25-24 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the annual Banjo Bowl contest in front of a sell-out crowd of 30,077 at CanadInns Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The teams traded field goals to start the contest. Sandro DeAngelis connected from 34 yards for Saskatchewan just 1:46 in. That was answered by a 22 yard kick by the Bombers' Justin Palardy at the 4:36mark. Winnipeg would then take the lead on an 82 yard punt return by Demond Washington. The Palardy convert with 2:03 to play in the first put Winnipeg up 10-3.

The Riders would tie it in the second. Subbing for an injured Darian Durant, Drew Willy would find an open Kory Sheets, who would take the pass and ramble 33 yards for the major. DeAngelis converted 1:37 into the quarter, tying the game 10-10. A DeAngelis 23 yard field goal with capped a 6 play, 42 yard drive, putting Saskatchewan back on top, 13-10 with 6:06 to go. Palary would connect from 32 yards with 9:05 left in the half to tie the game 13-13, then a 36 yard missed field goal single by Palardy would put the Bombers back on top at 14-13, with 1:11 still to play until two quarter time.

In the third, Sheets ran it in from 2 yards out and DeAngelis converted with 5:22 gone for a 20-14 Roughrider lead. Chris Milo would then blast a 73 yard put single, increasing the Saskatchewan lead to 21-14, with 6:53 left in the quarter. Winnipeg would then mount their comeback, starting with a 19 yard field goal by Palardy with 3:17 to play, making it 21-17 Riders after three.

Palardy would kick another field goal 3:18 into the final quarter, this one from 21 yards out, cutting the Bomber deficit to 1, at 21-10. DeAngelis would miss a 40 yard kick but get the single point with 7:39 left in regulation time, increasing the Saskatchewan lead to 22-20. Palardy would grab the lead for Winnipeg with a 30 yard field goal with 2:43 to play, making it 23-22 Bombers. Winnipeg would then work their way into scoring position again, but passed by a possible field goal, settling for a 56 yard punt single by Mike Renaud to increase the lead to 24-22 with just 28 seconds left. That left enough time for Willy to work his magic. First hitting Sheets for 10 yards, Brooks Foster for 20, then scampering 13 yards himself, moving the ball from their own 35 to the Blue Bomber 32. DeAngelis would come on for the winning kick from 40 yards out after time expired, giving the Riders the 25-24 win.

For Saskatchewan, Drew Willy was 17-of-23 passing for 188 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception and injured Darian Durant was 1-of-3 for 10 yards. Kory Sheets rushed 12 times for 32 yards and a touchdown and caught 5 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Sandro DeAngelis kicked 3 field goals, 2 converts and a single and Chris Milo had a punt single. For Winnipeg, Joey Elliott was 19-of-33 passing for 241 yards, Demond Washington ran a punt back for a touchdown, Terrance Edwards caught 4 passes for 62 yards, Chad Simpson rushed 9 times for 74 yards, Justin Palardy kicked 5 field goals, 1 convert and a single and Mike Renaud kicked a punt single.

The Roughriders passed for 198 yards and ran for 156 yards, piling up 296 total yards. They had 20 first downs, allowed 6 sacks, turned the ball over twice, took 12 penalties for 69 yards and held the ball for 32:01. The Blue Bombers had 310 total yards, 241 passing and 82 rushing, 16 first downs, allowed 2 sacks, took 6 penalties for 70 yards and held the ball for 27:59.

With the win, Saskatchewan evens their record at 5-5, while Winnipeg falls to 2-8. Next up for the Riders is a game in Montreal against the Alouettes next Sunday at 1:00pm EDT.
