U.S. Under-18 Select Team Defeats Slovakia, 5-3,
at 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament

Team USA Scores Three Power Play Goals in Final Game
PIESTANY, Slovakia – Adam Erne (New Haven, Conn.) scored two goals and added an assist while Anthony DeAngelo(Sewell, N.J.) registered three assists as the U.S. Under-18 Select Team defeated Slovakia, 5-3, in its final game at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

"We learned to play together and really accomplished that for 60 minutes today," said Matt Herr, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team. "We didn't let down. We capitalized on the power play and were successful on the penalty kill to stay focused on what we needed to do to win."

The U.S. had its best start of the tournament, holding a 2-0 lead for most of the first period. At 7:28, Gabe Guertler(Plantation, Fla.) scored the game's first goal when he capitalized on the power play. Five minutes later, Vinni Lettieri(Minnetonka, Minn.) got on the board, as he slipped behind the Slovakia defense and finished on a breakaway. Slovakia got one back late in the period to cut the U.S. lead to 2-1, but committed a penalty as time expired, giving Team USA a man advantage to begin the second stanza.

Just 1:11 into the second period, Erne scored a power play goal that would prove to be the only tally of the middle frame. Guertler and DeAngelo assisted on the play.

A hotly contested third period saw a combined four goals. After Slovakia was whistled for delaying the game prior to the start of the period, Erne potted his second power play goal of the contest at 1:24 while on a two-man advantage to extend the U.S. lead to 4-1. Slovakia scored the game's next two goals, both on the power play, to pull within one. With four minutes to play, Justin Bailey (Williamsville, N.Y.) ripped the puck over the glove of Maros Mikolas to secure the victory for Team USA.

USA Hockey Names Arvada Hockey Association, Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association and New Jersey Bandits as Model Association Programs
AHA, CSAHA and New Jersey Bandits Increase Model Association Programs to Four Across the Country
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Hockey announced today that the Arvada (Colo.) Hockey Association, the Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association and the New Jersey Bandits organization have been named as USA Hockey Model Association Programs.

As part of the continued implementation of the American Development Model, USA Hockey targeted certain areas of the country for the 2012-13 season and took applications from associations seeking to participate in its Model Association Program.

With the designation, the three organizations have committed to follow the American Development Model in full at the 12-and-under age group, including the adoption of guidelines associated with age-appropriate training at all levels of its association.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have these organizations as our next model associations,” said Ken Martel, director of USA Hockey’s American Development Model. “We’ve focused on implementation of the ADM at the eight-and-under level nationally the past two years, but felt it important to select a few associations that will take the ADM and put it into practice from 12U and younger.”

As a benefit of their model program designation, AHA, CSAHA and the New Jersey Bandits will receive added support from USA Hockey to assist in enacting the ADM principles throughout their programs, including equipment, signage, and educational materials. Further, all three will receive on-going staff support from USA Hockey's national office, including in-depth coaches training that will commence in early September.

"At AHA our mission is to foster a safe environment where kids can have fun, learn life lessons and develop hockey skills and a lifelong love of the sport; our goal is not to produce NHL players," said Sean Clarke, president of AHA. "If in striving to fulfill that mission some of the kids end up in the NHL, then that is a fantastic byproduct of the journey, but not the goal."
"This is a paradigm shift in the way young American hockey players will learn the game and acquire the skills necessary to compete at the highest level," said Bob Nolette, president of CSAHA. "We understand this shift and fully believe in this program. Further, we accept and welcome this change whereby our young players will receive the best available, age-appropriate skill development and training in the world."

"The ADM has been nothing but a positive experience for us as a facility," said Nick Regas, hockey director for the New Jersey Bandits. "The ADM has not only made the game more affordable for players but has also kept more of the players involved in the game. Our players have developed at a much faster rate and players have had a lot more fun since they are constantly involved at all times during practice. These players have not only developed hockey skills but have also developed confidence in themselves as well as in the game they love to play."

NOTES: USA Hockey’s American Development Model was launched in January of 2009 to provide associations nationwide – for the first time ever - a blueprint for optimal athlete development. The ADM is based on age-appropriate training and uses long-term athlete development principles as its foundation  … The National Hockey League has endorsed the ADM since its inception … The ADM is for players of all skill levels and helps all participants reach their full potential.

Three-Game Series Even; Wraps Up Sunday at 10 a.m.
BLAINE, Minn. - The United States Women’s National Under-18 Team defeated Canada, 3-1, here tonight at the Schwan Super Rink to even the three-game series at one win apiece.

Sydney Daniels (Southwick, Mass.) opened the scoring for the U.S. at 12:08 of the first period with a shot from just right of the slot that beat Canada goaltender Kassidy Sauvé high on the glove side. Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) and Grace Zarzecki (Chicago, Ill.) drew assists on the play. The U.S. took a 2-1 lead at 10:13 of the second period when the team’s youngest player, 15-year-old Jincy Dunne(O’Fallon, Mo.), found the back of the net with Team USA on the power play. U.S. netminder Sidney Peters (Geneva, Ill.) made two big stops midway through the middle stanza on Canada’s fourth power play to preserve the U.S. advantage after two periods. Peters finished with 26 saves in the game.

Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, N.Y.) scored into an empty net with :33 left in regulation to seal a 3-1 victory for Team USA.

Team USA Wins Second Straight in Three-Game Series

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Four different players scored to help the U.S. Women’s National Under-22 Select Team to a 4-2 victory over Canada tonight at the Winsport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex in Calgary, Alberta.

“I thought it was a good, hard-fought win,” said Katey Stone (Watertown, Conn.), head coach of Team USA. "The goaltending was great at both ends and we elevated our competitiveness when the game required it.”
Kelly Terry staked Canada to a 1-0 lead with 4:25 left to play in the opening period, but Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) answered back for Team USA with a power-play goal just three minutes later on passes from twin-sister Monique Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.).

Mélodie Daoust’s tally at 6:24 of the second period regained the lead for Canada, however, the advantage didn’t last long as the U.S. tied it up just eight seconds later when Michelle Picard (Taunton, Mass.) fed Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.). Team USA then took its first lead of the game and never relinquished it as Marissa Gedman(Framingham, Mass.) found the back of the net with help from Coyne and Haley Skarupa (Rockville, Md.) at 13:35.Kelley Steadman (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) added the fourth and final tally for the U.S. less than a minute later. Jocelyne Lamoureux picked up her second point of the game with an assist on Steadman’s goal.

Lauren Slebodnick (Manchester, N.H.) made 22 saves in the winning effort.

The Giants asserted themselves in multiple ways with their 10-1 rout over San Diego. They showed that they retain offensive punch despite the absence of the .346-hitting Cabrera, scoring a season-high eight runs in the third inning and hitting for the cycle with their first four hits. They re-established their proficiency on the road, where they have won 10 of their last 14 games and outscored opponents 103-45. And they leapfrogged Los Angeles to regain first place in the National League West, a half-game ahead of the Dodgers.
