Calgary comeback foils Riders in overtime.

Calgary, AB. -- A fourth quarter lead slipped away and a determined Calgary Stampeders squard got an overtime major from Nik Lewis to beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 41-38, in front of 32,228 fans at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta.

Calgary, who let a late lead against Montreal slip away in their previous game, grabbed the lead with 6:53 gone in the opening quarter, on a 46 yard field goal by Rene Paredes. The Roughriders would take the lead after a change of possessions, driving 54 yards in 6 plays, ending with a 2 yard run behind right tackle by Kory Sheets. Chris Milo converted with 1:12 to go, giving Saskatchewan a 7-3 lead after one.

Nik Lewis grabbed a 5 yard pass from Kevin Glenn for the Stamps' first major of the night early in the second quarter. The Paredes convert 3:59 into quarter number two, gave Calgary a 10-7 lead. The Riders responded by zipping 73 yards in just 4 plays. With the short yardage unit in, Drew Willy passed 2 yards to fullback Neal Hughes for the major. The Milo convert with 8:14 left in the half put Saskatchewan up 14-10. After a change of possessions, Paredes kicked a 37 yard field goal with 3:54 left in the half, to draw within one, at 14-13. Milo would concede a safety touch at the three minute warning when he covered a high snap in the end zone, putting Calgary up 15-14. The Riders would regain the lead, driving 83 yards in 9 plays. Darian Durant found Chris Getzlaf in the front left corner of the end zone with a 30 yard pass to cap a late drive. The Milo convert with 10 seconds left put Saskatchewan up 21-15 at the half.

The Riders would get a 69 yard kickoff return from Tristan Jackson to open the second half, putting the ball at the Stampeder 41. 6 plays later, the ball was in the end zone, as Weston Dressler caught a 20 yard pass from Durant for the score. Milo converted 3:38 into the second half, giving Saskatchewan a 28-15 lead. Paredes would respond with just 13 ticks left in the third, kicking a 44 yard field goal for Calgary, cutting the Stamps' deficit to 10, at 28-18 after three.

In the final quarter, Sheets dove over center from the 1 for a major and with the Milo convert, the Rider lead was 35-18, with 9:30 to play in regulation time. Credit Calgary for not pitching the tent, especially after their collapse against Montreal just one week ago. Lewis caught a 21 yard strike from Glenn and Paredes converted with 5:11 to play, slicing the Saskatchewan lead to 35-25. They would dig deeper into the deficit just 2:02 later on a 20 yard Glenn to Larry Taylor touchdown pass and a Paredes convert, drawing to within 3, at 35-32. They would threaten to win it late, reaching the Rider 10 with less than a minute to play, before settling for a field goal from Paredes with 34 seconds left that bounced off the left upright and through, tying the game 35-35 and forcing overtime.

Saskatchewan just missed a major on a pass to Getzlaf that fell incomplete in the end zone on their first play from the Stampeder 35. Durant was sacked at the 43 on the next play and Milo would come on and blast a 50 yard field goal, putting the Riders up 38-35. Calgary would make the comeback complete moments later. On their second play from scrimmage, Glenn would roll right, then throw back to the left to Lewis who did the rest, scooting into the end zone from 16 yards out, giving the Stampeders the 41-38 win.

For Calgary, Kevin Glenn was 27-of-42 passing for 385 yards and 4 touchdowns. Bo Levi Mitchell, in a brief appearance in the fourth when Glenn was knocked from the game for three plays on the game-tying drive, went 1-for-3 passing for 7 yards. Nik Lewis caught 7 passes for 98 yards and 3 touchdowns, Larry Taylor caught 2 balls for 24 yards and a major and Rene Paredes kicked 4 field goals and 3 converts for the Stampeders. For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 20-of-39 passing for 238 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception and Drew Willy was 1-of-1 for 2 yards and a major. Chris Getzlaf made 6 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, Weston Dressler caught 5 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown and Neal Hughes had the one catch for a 2 yard major. Kory Sheets rushed 15 times for 72 yards and 2 touchdowns and Chris Milo kicked 1 field goal and 5 converts.

Calgary had 447 total yards to the Riders' 314 on 392 yards passing and 72 yards rushing. Each team turned the ball over once and the Stampeders were penalized 9 times for 105 yards, while Saskatchewan was flagged 7 times for 72 yards.

With the win, Calgary improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Roughriders slipped to 3-1. Both teams play again on July 28th. The Stamps play at home against the BC Lions at 9:00pm EDT. Saskatchewan will rematch with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a team they beat 43-16 in week one. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm EDT on 620 CKRM and the Rider Radio Network. The game can be seen in Canada on TSN and in the U.S. on ESPN3.com.
