U.S. Inline National Team Beats Slovenia, 5-4,
at 2012 IIHF InLine Hockey World Championship
Nielsson Arcibal Scores Twice, Including Game Winner with Five Seconds Remaining
INGOLSTADT, Germany -- Defenseman Nielsson Arcibal (Carlsbad, Calif.) scored the decisive goal with five seconds left in regulation to lead the U.S. Inline National Team to a 5-4 victory over Slovenia in its second game of the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championship at Saturn Arena.

“We came out strong and got out to a 3-0 lead,” said Joe Cook, head coach of the U.S. Inline National Team. “Then the tempo changed. We are a team with speed and we need to use it. At the end of the day good teams find a way to win games. I believe in our guys heavily. Our character was very strong at the end to pull this one out.”

Team USA opened the scoring with goals at 11:18 and 11:43 of the first quarter. Arcibal tallied from the right circle following a rink-wide feed from Pat Lee (Schaumberg, Ill.). Then Rafael Rodriguez (Oceanside, Calif.) scored from a nearly identical spot in the right circle to make it 2-0.

Five minutes into the second quarter C.J. Yoder (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a power-play goal off an assist from Lee to make it 3-0.

Slovenia got on the scoreboard at 8:14 and the U.S. led at the half by a 3-1 count.

Team USA’s lead was trimmed to 3-2 when the Slovenians scored in the waning seconds of the third quarter.

Twenty-six seconds into the fourth quarter, a turnover by the US. resulted in a Slovenia goal to even the game at three. Ales Remar gave Slovenia its first lead of the game at 4:37 of the final frame, but his holding penalty four minutes later opened the door for Team USA.

At 8:39, Anthony Miner (Glendora, Calif.) dropped the puck back to Travis Noe (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who scored from the lower left slot on the power play to even the score at 4-4.

With 15 seconds to play in the game a U.S. defenseman was tripped up by an errant stick, leading to a clean breakaway for Rok Ticar. U.S. netminder Jerry Kuhn (Southgate, Mich.) made his finest save of the day, however, and with the clock winding down in regulation, Arcibal streaked down the left wing, held off a defender and snuck a backhand shot inside the short-side post to win the game.

The U.S. Inline National Team will face off against Canada tomorrow (June 3) at 12 p.m. ET in its third and final preliminary round game. All games will be streamed live and for free on IIHF.com.
