Tampa, FL. -- NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman led off his weekly radio show Thursday night by addressing the events of Wednesday night in Tampa Bay, where the game between the Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers featured multiple instances of the referees whistling play dead after the Flyers held the puck in their own zone for a prolonged period of time while the Lightning sat back in a 1-3-1 defensive formation -- with neither side willing to blink first.

"While we had an interesting night in Tampa, I'm not exactly sure it was the grand moment of the season that everybody's speculating," Bettman said, drawing laughter from his co-host, E.J. Hradek.

U.S. Junior Select Team Tops Russia, 6-3,
in the World Junior A Challenge Quarterfinal Round

Kuraly Scores Twice to Help Team USA Advance to Semifinals

LANGLEY, B.C. - Sean Kuraly (Dublin, Ohio/Indiana Ice) scored two third-period goals, as the U.S. Junior Select Team topped Russia, 6-3, in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 World Junior A Challenge. With the win, Team USA improved to 2-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) overall and advanced to the semifinals.

"We knew Russia was going to come at us hard, but we showed the will to win tonight," said Regg Simon, head coach of the U.S. Junior Select Team. "We need to continue with our process tomorrow in order to advance to the championship game."

Team USA opened the scoring at 12:41 of the first period when Alex Broadhurst (New Lenox, Ill./Green Bay Gamblers) fired a wrist shot high over the blocker of goalie Andrei Vasilevski for a power-play goal. But a Russian goal three minutes later knotted the score, 1-1, heading into the middle frame.

The U.S. regained the lead midway through the second when Mario Lucia (Chanhassen, Minn./Penticton Vees) stickhandled around three Russian defensemen and fired a wrist shot high past Vasilevski for his third tally of the tournament.

Team USA extended its lead to two goals when Austyn Young (South St. Paul, Minn./Sioux Falls Stampede) gained position in the slot and chipped the puck over Vasilevski's shoulder at 16:14 of the second. Then, just two minutes later, Ethan Prow (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Des Moines Buccaneers) buried a long slap shot to give the U.S. a 4-1 lead after two.

Russia cut the U.S. lead to one with a pair of goals less than four minutes apart. But Team USA responded when Kuraly's wrist shot hit a Russian defenseman's stick and beat Vasilevski low to the stick side to make the score 5-3 midway through the third period. Kuraly later closed out the scoring with less than two minutes remaining with a wrist shot from the right circle.

U.S. goalie Ryan McKay (Palatine, Ill.) made 26 saves in the victory, while Vasilevski turned aside 50 shots in a losing effort.

The U.S. Junior Select Team will face Canada East in the semifinal round tomorrow night (Nov. 11), with the game time to be determined based on the outcome of the quarterfinal match-up between Canada West and the Czech Republic. A full schedule is below.
