Gruden Named Assistant Coach at National Team Development Program

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - John Gruden, who played college hockey at Ferris State University and went on to a 10-year professional playing career, has been named assistant coach at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich., it was announced today. Gruden will help guide the U.S. National Under-18 Team in the 2011-12 season.

“We're extremely pleased to have John join our staff,” said Scott Monaghan, senior director of operations at the NTDP. "He brings great passion and knowledge and is someone that will have a positive influence on our players."

Gruden was a four-year standout at Ferris State (1990-94) where he played in 155 games and amassed 104 points (40-64). He earned NCAA West First-Team All-American honors and was also named a Central Collegiate Hockey Association First Team All-Star in 1994. Gruden went on to compete professionally for 10 seasons, with stops in the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, International Hockey League and in Europe. Gruden also represented the U.S. internationally at the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship in Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, Finland.

Gruden most recently served as head coach and director of player personnel for the Oakland (Mich.) Junior Grizzlies AAA hockey team. The Virginia, Minn. native was also head coach at Stoney Creek (Mich.) High School (2007-10) and Brother Rice Prep School (2005-07) in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

"I am excited about the opportunity that working within USA Hockey brings," said Gruden. "I'm joining a great staff and look forward to developing these top young athletes at the NTDP."

Gruden replaces Matt Greason, who left to become head coach with Trinity College after two seasons at the NTDP.

USA Hockey Celebrating its 75th Anniversary Season in 2011-12

Great People, Moments to Be Highlighted Throughout the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2011-12 campaign marks the 75th anniversary season for USA Hockey and the national governing body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States will celebrate its diamond anniversary in multiple ways during the course of the year.

The celebration will culminate with a special gala June 8, 2012, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

"There's a lot to be proud of as we reflect on USA Hockey's first 75 years," said Dave Ogrean executive director of USA Hockey. "Our organization was literally started out of a shoebox in New York City in 1937 and, thanks to the thousands and thousands of volunteers across the country, we're now nearly 600,000 strong. We look forward to celebrating in different ways throughout the season and sharing the stories of some of those volunteers who have helped our sport flourish."

USAHockey.com will be the online home of the celebration, providing links to feature stories, exclusive video interviews and photos from the past to the present. In addition, USA Hockey's Facebook, Twitter and YouTube pages will house exclusive content and allow fans to share their memories of hockey in the United States.

USA Hockey Magazine will publish feature stories, polls and timelines that outline the history of the sport, the organization and the magazine itself over the years.

Available at Barnes & Noble nationwide as well as other select retailers, Star Spangled Hockey takes readers on a journey through the first 75 years of USA Hockey through the eyes of legendary hockey writer Kevin Allen. Published by Triumph Books, Star Spangled Hockey is available online as well at Amazon.com.

The 2011-12 season features other significant milestones, including the 15th anniversary campaign on the ice for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., the NTDP is a full-time program that develops student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and in their future hockey careers. Comprised of two squads - the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 Teams - the program competes in the United States Hockey League, as well as against collegiate and international opponents.

Additionally, the fifth anniversary of Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebok, will be celebrated Feb. 17-19, 2012. Launched by USA Hockey in 2008, Hockey Weekend Across America is a nationwide initiative to celebrate the game and those involved at all levels and to expose hockey to new audiences.

Along with competing in world championships at the under-18, junior and men's levels, USA Hockey will play host to the world's top female players during the 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship April 7-14 in Burlington, Vt.

As always, the USA Hockey National Championships will be held nationwide in March and April, while the wildly popular Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships will take place Feb. 10-12, 2012, in Eagle River, Wis., and the USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Festival is slated for April 13-15, 2012, in Dallas. Additionally, USA Hockey will officially welcome the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2011 at a formal ceremony on Dec. 12 in Chicago.

Whether you remember Breast Cancer this month, Colon Cancer in March, or some other form of the disease at any time of year, is not as important as remembering that all cancer is something we need to be aware of. And fighting cancer to drive it away is always a good thing to do. I beat colon cancer six years ago and I am thankful for that, no more so than when I remember how, if it had won, how I would have missed out on.
