USA Hockey Launches Revolutionary Online Coaching Education Modules

Age-Specific Modules Include On- and Off-Ice Lessons from Top Hockey Experts

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Beginning today, and throughout September, USA Hockey is launching its series of revolutionary online, age-specific coaching education modules that will further enhance the organization's already highly regarded Coaching Education Program. The modules address on-ice skill development and team concepts, as well as off-ice training and overall athlete wellness.

"This is an exciting step forward," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "It will arm our coaches with the latest and most specific information pertinent to the age level they're coaching. I'm not aware of any other youth sports organizations in our country that has anything like this."

Each of the modules - 8 & Under, 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 16/18 & Under - uses animation, video and whiteboard examples along with written text and tests to cover a wide array of age-appropriate hockey topics. Among the on-ice topics covered in each module are skill development, practice planning, goaltending and team concepts. Additionally, the modules address off-ice issues such as off-ice training, nutrition, sport psychology, sleep awareness and drug and alcohol awareness.

All modules are hosted by U.S. Olympian Ed Olczyk and include content from longtime NHL coaches Barry Smith and Mike Sullivan; American Development Model Regional Managers Roger Grillo and Bob Mancini; medical professionals Dr. Dan Freigang and Dr. Chris Winter; and women's hockey experts such as current and former U.S. Women's National Team head coaches Mark Johnson, Ben Smith and Katey Stone.

USA Hockey-registered coaches must pass the age-specific module pertaining to the age level of children they are coaching. The modules are designed to take approximately five-to-six hours to complete, and include questions after each chapter that coaches must answer.

The 8 & Under module is available beginning today, while the other modules will be rolled out throughout the course of the month. A full schedule is below.

You know when you absolutely need a bathroom, but there isn't a public one to be found? Well that problem will soon be gone thanks to Cloo -- short for Community and Loo -- an app that allows people to make their private restrooms available to the public for a small fee. If you're a restroom lender you may receive a small amount of money every time a loo-user shows up. And Cloo says "brand partnerships" will help to keep loo-lenders stocked with important toiletries.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fl. -- The celebration will have to wait.

The 11,611 in attendance at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night were denied a chance to witness the 1,000th win in Rays history, as Tampa Bay fell to the Rangers, 8-0, snapping their three-game winning streak.

It was the 14th time this season the Rays (77-64) have been shut out, as the Rangers' C.J. Wilson was the latest to take the honors. With the loss, Tampa Bay dropped to 5-3 in its season series against Texas, with one game to play.

SAN DIEGO, Ca. -- Call the Giants' 6-4 triumph Tuesday night over San Diego anything you want. Just don't call it conventional.

San Francisco's blueprint for victory included plenty of scribbling on the margins. For one thing, nobody from Opening Night's starting lineup started this game.

The 30-something journeyman batting leadoff wasn't Andres Torres, but Justin Christian.

The first baseman providing much-needed power wasn't veteran Aubrey Huff, but rookie Brett Pill.

The decision went to Eric Surkamp, who spent the bulk of this season at Double-A.

Let's face it: Yahoo ain't what it used to be. The secret sauce it once had that made it so special has been gone for many years, partly because of better, smarter companies like Google. Maybe that'll change now that Yahoo has fired it's latest CEO. Her name is Carol Bartz and she emailed her employees Tuesday to say she was out.

HAMPTON, Ga. -- It may have taken two extra days to complete the AdvoCare 500, but for Jeff Gordon, it was worth the wait.

The four-time Cup champion chased down teammate Jimmie Johnson in the waning stages of Tuesday's rain-delayed Sprint Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, then held off a furious rally by Johnson to score his third win of the season and the 85th of his career.

"Hell yeah! That's what I'm talking about boys!" an elated Gordon yelled after crossing the finish line .598 second ahead of Johnson.

Gordon was strong early, leading 100 of the first 164 laps. And after two brief stops for rain -- one that brought a halt to the action for nearly 25 minutes -- he slowly worked his way back into the lead on Lap 276, passing Johnson, and then held his advantage through a final round of green-flag pit stops on Lap 284.

He had nearly a 2-second lead with 22 laps remaining in the 325-lap race, but Johnson closed the gap and the two battled furiously through the closing moments.

"That was fun. I was slipping, he was slipping," Gordon said. "There were a couple of times I thought he had me.

"This team is on a roll."
