The Riders are back in action this afternoon for the annual Labour Day Classic against the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Kickoff is set for 4:00pm EDT on 620 CKRM and the Rider Radio Network, with Rod Pedersen and Carm Carteri calling all the action. Listen link is on the right side of this blog. The game can also be seen live in Canada on TSN and online in the U.S. on ESPN3.com.

Beavers lose opener in OT to Sacramento State

A fourth-quarter Beaver comeback went for naught Saturday, as the Sacramento State Hornets beat Oregon State in overtime, 29-28, in the season opener for both teams, in front of 41,581 at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon.

Both teams were a bit ineffective in the beginning, with neither able to post anything on the board in the opening quarter. Oregon State did get close once, but turned the ball over at the Sac State 24 on an interception.

The Beavers did get the jump 3:08 into the second quarter, as freshman kicker Trevor Romaine booted a 27 yard field goal to give OSU a 3-0 lead. The Hornets would then take control, with a pair of touchdowns before halftime. A Jeff Fleming to Chase Deadder 19 yard pass with 9:23 left in the half and a 4 yard Fleming to Deadder slant pass with 2:48 'til halftime, plus a pair of PATs from Jason Diniz gave the Big Sky Conference squad from Sacramento State a 14-3 lead at the break.

By plan, the Beavers replaced starting QB Ryan Katz, who had a rather ineffective first half with red-shirt freshman Sean Mannion to open up the third quarter. Oregon State would get a 45 yard field goal from Romaine 4:09 into the third, cutting the deficit to 8, at 14-6. The Hornets would respond on their next possession, going 75 yards in 7 plays, ending with a Morris Norrise to Brandyn Reed 39 yard pass on the back end of a trick play double-pass. With the Diniz PAT, Sac State would lead 21-6 with 7:40 to play in the third. True freshman Malcolm Agnew, who fumbled away a scoring opportunity early in the second half, would then score twice to help the Beavers tie the game . The first came on a 1 yard run 2:16 into the final quarter and the second came on a 4 yard run 3:32 later. Romaine kicked the extra point after the first score then Mannion, who earlier in the drive found Markus Wheaton down the right side for a 69 yard catch and run to set up the score, found Wheaton again in the back of the end zone on a post route, tying the game 21-21. Each team had one more chance of score in regulation. The Hornets would have a 28 yard field goal attempt by Diniz blocked with 2:35 left, then it would be Oregon State's turn. The Beavers would drive the field, chewing up time in the process, setting themselves up for a winning field goal on the game's final play. However, a false start penalty moved the ball from the 15 back to the 20, from where Romaine would drill the ball off the right upright as time expired on a 27 yard attempt and the two teams would head to overtime, tied at 21.

Sacramento State won the OT toss and elected to play defense first. Oregon State would take just two Agnew runs to score. The second, from 17 yards away, put the ball in the end zone. Romaine kicked the PAT and the Beavers had the lead at 28-21. The Hornets would then take the ball and score in six plays, with the capper coming on a 6 yard pass from Fleming to Reed. On the convert, Sac State would shift out of kick formation, forcing Oregon State to call a time out. The Hornets would then come out and line up for the two pointer, with a wide-open Reed catching a floater from Fleming for the deuce, giving Sacramento State the 29-28 win.

For the Hornets, Jeff Fleming was 22-for-35 passing for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns. Morris Norrise was 1-for-1 for 39 yards and 1 touchdown. Chase Deadder caught a pair of touchdown passes as did Brandyn Reed, who also caught the winning two-point conversion. Jason Diniz kicked 3 extra points for Sac State. For the Beavers, Ryan Katz was 11-for-22 passing for 87 yards and 1 interception and Sean Minnion was 8-for-12 passing for 143 yards and 1 two-point conversion. Malcolm Agnew had a huge game in his first-ever college start, rushing the ball 33 times for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. Markus Wheaton caught 6 balls for 108 yards and a two-point conversion and Trevor Romaine kicked 2 field goals and 2 PATs.

The Hornets ran 68 plays for 327 yards total offense, 71 on the ground and 269 in the air. They had 20 first downs, were 7-of-14 on third down conversions and 1-of-1 on fourth down. They fumbled the ball away twice, were penalized 4 times for 22 yards and held onto the ball for 29:51. Oregon State ran 79 plays for 496 yards total offense, 266 on the ground and 230 in the air. They had 22 first downs, and were 8-of-16 on third down conversions. They gave the ball away twice, once on a fumble and once on an interception, were penalized 7 times for 75 yards, including three pass interference penalties and held onto the ball for 30:09.

Sacramento State starts the season 1-0. They play at Southern Utah next Saturday, game time is 3:05pm EDT. The Beavers, who open 0-1, travel to Wisconsin next Saturday for a meeting with the Badgers, ranked #11 in the AP Top25 and #10 in the USA Today poll. Kickoff is set for 12:00pm EDT. Catch the game on 860AM KPAM and the Beaver Sports Network, with Mike Parker, Jim Wilson and Ron Callan calling the action.

SAN FRANCISCO, Ca. -- For all the things the Giants did right in Friday's series-opening win over the D-backs, they saw just as much go wrong Saturday.

They didn't draw walks. Their ace, Tim Lincecum, couldn't get through six innings. They didn't put up much of a fight at all against Arizona right-hander Ian Kennedy. And the raucous playoff-like atmosphere that filled AT&T Park a night before was often reduced to disappointed silence Saturday as the Giants fell, 7-2, to the D-backs.

The loss rebuilt Arizona's National League West lead over San Francisco to six games, a margin that will be difficult for the Giants to overcome with only 23 games remaining.

"It's a tough loss," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We know we're running out of time, but I thought they battled."
