The Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Toronto Argonauts put their matching 1-6 records up against each other at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario tomorrow night. BOSTON -- James Shields finished what he started for the ninth time this season and still came away empty-handed Tuesday afternoon.
Shields pitched his ninth complete game while minting his 20th quality start of the season, but he took his 10th loss as the Red Sox defeated the Rays, 3-1, at Fenway Park in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Tampa Bay's loss pushed it 10 games behind first-place Boston in the American League East, and the two squads will play the second game at 7:05 p.m. ET.

BOSTON -- Jeff Niemann picked a good time to bring out his best.
On a day when James Shields' ninth complete game of the season wasn't good enough to beat the Red Sox in the first part of a day-night doubleheader, two days before rookie starter Alex Cobb will undergo surgery to repair a blockage in his rib and three days after Jeremy Hellickson had his worst start since early June, Niemann did what he's been doing for the past two months.
The 28-year-old followed Shields' complete game with one of his own on Tuesday night, allowing just two runs and striking out 10, and the Rays earned a crucial split with their division foes, picking up a 6-2 win.
It is the first time a team tossed a pair of complete-game efforts since the Brewers did it in 1993.

ATLANTA -- To categorize the Giants' 2-1, 11-inning loss Tuesday to the Atlanta Braves as another example of superlative pitching being undermined by lame hitting would be missing the point.
San Francisco's 13th defeat in 18 games was anything but shameful.
