Calvillo ties record as Als beat Riders by 14

Regina, Saskatchewan -- Anthony Calvillo threw five touchdown passes, tying the CFL all-time career record, leading the Montreal Alouettes to a 39-25 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders last night, in front of a sell-out crowd of 30,048 at Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The game started a bit slow, with both teams going 2 and out on their opening possessions. Montreal did get a field position advantage in the exchange, starting their second possession at the Rider 49. On the third play of the drive, Brian Bratton caught a 25 yard touchdown pass from Anthony Calvillo. Sean Whyte's convert with 10:55 remaining in the first gave the Alouettes a 7-0 lead. Saskatchewan was in business, as Tristan Jackson ran the ensuing kick to the Montreal 23. After a 7 yard pass play, Wes Cates broke a tackle on the next play and went 16 yards for a major score. Eddie Johnson's convert with 9:30 remaining in the opening quarter tied the game 7-7. After starting with poor field position on their next possession, Calvillo quickly marched the Als into scoring position. The Riders turned that threat back, as Jamel Richardon dropped the ball on a catch at the 3, with Craig Butler grabbing the ball in midair for the drive-killing interception. After holding Saskatchewan, Montreal would once again move quickly into scoring possession, reaching the Rider 4 inside the final minute of the first. From there Calvillo found Brandon Whitaker in the left flat for the touchdown, capping a 6 play, 68 yard drive. Whyte converted with :04 left, giving the visitors a 14-7 lead.

Saskatchewan would open the second quarter with a quick foray into Alouette territory. On 3rd and 1 at the Montreal 8, Neal Hughes went into the center of the line, barely getting enough for the first down to keep the drive alive. Cates made it from the 7 to the 1 yard line on the next play, before Hughes dove over on the drives' 11th play for the major score. Johnson converted with 9:02 to go 'til two-quarter time, tying the game 14-14. Johnson then drove a bomb on the kickoff, drilling the goalpost, which denied him a single and gave the Als the ball at their own 25. Calvillo would sneak on 3rd and 1 at their own 50 to keep his teams' drive alive. A pair of penalties, for pass interference and unnecessary roughness helped push the ball into scoring position. Two incompletions from the Rider 14 forced Montreal to settle for Whyte's 21 yard field goal and a 17-14 lead with 4:02 left in the half. The Roughriders, aided by a pass interference call and some pinpoint passing by Darian Durant quickly moved the ball deep into Alouette territory, before the drive stalled at the 9. Johnson would come on and drill a 16 yard field goal with 1:29 to go in the half, tying the game 17-17.

Montreal would move into scoring position on their second possession of the third quarter, getting a touchdown on a 24 yard pass from Calvillo to S.J. Green. Whyte converted with 6:38 left in the third, for a 24-17 lead. Whyte would drill the ensuing kickoff into the end zone 3 seconds later for a single and a 25-17 Als lead. Calvillo would hit Bratton with a two-yard scoring strike and Whyte would convert with :10 remaining in the third, extending the Montreal lead to 15, 32-17. The Als outgained Saskatchewan 355 to 191 through three quarters.

The Riders would trim the lead to 32-18 with 11:43 to go in regulation time, as Johnson kicked a 58 yard punt single. Calvillo would tie Damon Allen for the CFL's all-time touchdown passing record moments later , hitting Tim Maypray on a crossing route for a 54 yard touchdown, the 394th touchdown pass of Calvillo's illustrious CFL career. Whyte's convert increased the lead to 39-18, with 9:14 still to play in the final quarter. Saskatchewan responded, as Durant found Chris Getzlaf behind a defender in the right side of the endzone. Getzlaf's diving catch on the 22 yard pass play, along with Johnson's convert brought the Riders back to a two-score game, down 39-25 with 7:46 still on the Mosaic Stadium clock. The Green and White would be in business again moments later, as a wobbly, 21 yard punt by Whyte gave Saskatchewan the ball at the Montreal 52. After Dressler dropped a fly pattern down the left side on first down, Terrence Nunn caught one over the middle, reaching the 24. Durant ran for 7, then tossed one, under pressure, out of bounds. On third and 3, the Als' Billy Parker knocked down a pass over the middle, stopping the Rider scoring threat with 3:52 to go. Saskatchewan never seriously threatened after that and Montreal ran out the clock to win by 14, 39-25.

Anthony Calvillo led the Als with 29-for-43 passing for 419 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception. Jamel Richardson caught 9 passes for 114 yards, Brian Bratton caught 5 passes for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Tim Maypray, S.J. Green and Brandon Whitaker each caught 1 touchdown pass. Sean Whyte kicked 5 converts, 1 field goal and 1 kickoff single for Montreal. For the Riders, Darian Durant was 22-for-40 passing for 273 yards and 1 touchdown. Chris Getzlaf caught the lone Rider touchdown pass. Wes Cates ran the ball 7 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Neal Hughes added a rushing touchdown as well. Eddie Johnson kicked 1 field goal, 3 converts and a punt single.

Montreal improves to 2-0 ahead of their next game, a Week #3 contest at home against 1-1 Toronto, 22-16 losers at Winnipeg this past Friday, next Friday, July 15th. Saskatchewan, which starts the season 0-2, hits the road next week for the first time this season, traveling to Hamilton for a meeting with the Tigercats, who lost at Edmonton last night 28-10. Kickoff is set for 4:00pm EDT on 620 CKRM, the Rider Radio Network, TSN and the NFL Network.

NEW YORK --  Je-tah's 3,000th hurt. Just not as much as hit No. 3,003 did.

Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit -- a home run in the third inning -- earned the Yankees captain a raucous ovation from the 48,103 watching at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. But hit No. 3,003 -- a grounder through the middle of a drawn-in infield in the eighth -- completed a 5-for-5 performance and earned the Yankees a 5-4 win over the Rays.

SAN FRANCISCO --  Displaying an odd brand of consistency, Tim Lincecum teased the New York Mets for six innings to help the Giants manufacture a 3-1 victory Saturday.

Lincecum (7-7) retired the first two batters in every inning before allowing a Met to reach base. Then he'd record the third out. Lincecum departed from this pattern only in the first inning, when back-to-back, two-out doubles by Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy generated New York's lone run. It ended Lincecum's streak of 16 scoreless innings spanning two starts against the Mets.

Baseball's "Sad Lexicon" was published on this day in 1910. Journalist Franklin P. Adams created the second best-known baseball poem (after “Casey at the Bat”) for the New York Evening Mail. Adams extolled the double-play trio of Chicago Cubs Joe Tinker (shortstop), Johnny Evers (second base) and Frank Chance (first base): “These are the saddest of possible words/‘Tinker to Evers to Chance.’/Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,/Tinker and Evers and Chance./Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,/Making a Giant hit into a double—/Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:/‘Tinker to Evers to Chance.’” See also: “Mighty Casey Has Struck Out: Anniversary” (June 3) and “Tinker to Evers to Chance: First Double Play Anniversary” (Sept 15). SPARTA, Kentucky -- What was Kyle Busch's dominant impression of his victory in the inaugural Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway?

It wasn't that he'll be written into the record book as the first Cup winner at the 1.5-mile track, the first speedway introduced into the series in 10 years.

No, Busch will remember Saturday's Quaker State 400 at Kentucky as the last thing he won on the way to his next race -- in this case Sunday's marquee Super Late Model event at Slinger Speedway in Wisconsin.

That's the way Busch thinks -- win and move on.

In holding off fast-closing David Reutimann and Jimmie Johnson in a two-lap stretch run, Busch won for the third time this season, the 22nd time in his Cup career and the 99th time across NASCAR's top three national series, third most all-time.
