Jeff Sauer Named Head Coach
of the 2011-12 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team
Mike MacMillan to Serve as Head Coach
of the 2011-12 U.S. National Developmental Sled Hockey Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Jeff Sauer (Madison, Wis.) will serve as the head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team, while Mike MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) will take on the role of head coach of the U.S. National Developmental Sled Hockey Team for the 2011-12 season, it was announced today by USA Hockey.
"It's terrific to have Jeff and Mike involved with our sled hockey program," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Both have a vast amount of experience and will be terrific mentors to our players and great ambassadors for the sport and our country."
Sauer has coached a wide array of U.S. teams throughout his career. He was the head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team at the 1995 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Championship in Stockholm, Sweden, and at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle, Wash., along with serving as head coach for the U.S. Men's Select Team at the 1989 Pravda Cup in Leningrad, Soviet Union, and at the 1997 Tampere Cup in Tampere, Finland.
In addition, Sauer has helped select the last five U.S. Deaflympic Ice Hockey Teams, while leading the team as head coach in the last three Winter Deaflymipcs. Most recently, he guided the U.S. Deaflympic squad to a gold-medal finish at the 2007 Winter Deaflympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sauer also is currently a member of USA Hockey's International Council and Disabled Hockey Committee, and is president of the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association.
Sauer’s illustrious 31-year NCAA Division I college coaching career featured 655 wins (seventh all-time) and two national championships, both of which came during his tenure with the University of Wisconsin (1983, 1990).
Sauer led Wisconsin to three NCAA Men's Frozen Four appearances, 12 NCAA tournament berths, six Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff titles and two WCHA regular-season crowns in 20 seasons as head coach (1982-2002). He also spent 11 years (1971-82) as head coach of the men's ice hockey team at his alma mater, Colorado College, where he was twice named WCHA Coach of the Year (1972, 1975).
In 2000, Sauer was recognized with USA Hockey's Distinguished Achievement Award. Sauer was also named to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the John ‘Snooks’ Kelly Founders Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association for his contributions to the overall growth and development of the sport of ice hockey in the United States.
"It's always a great honor to be selected to coach a national team," said Sauer, who currently serves as the assistant to the commissioner of the WCHA. "I'm very excited to have the opportunity to work with USA Hockey and I'm looking forward to getting on the ice and working with all the players."
Meanwhile, Mike MacMillan will begin his first season as head coach of the U.S. National Developmental Sled Hockey Team. In his current position as National Coach-in-Chief and Coaching Section Director for USA Hockey, MacMillan has traveled across the country to speak at coaching symposiums and has been on countless committees to advance the game and further educate coaches.
“I'm really excited about the opportunity and very honored to be asked by USA Hockey to be put in this position," MacMillan said. "I look forward to working with the athletes involved and putting together a coaching staff that has as much passion and pride to represent USA Hockey as I do."
MacMillan is the head boys' ice hockey coach at Buffalo (Minn.) High School, a position he's held for 16 years (1996-2011), and has received the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association Section Coach of the Year in 2002 and the Dave Peterson Award in 2001, which is given annually to a high school coach who has shown great leadership in developing youth hockey either locally or statewide. MacMillan is also the Minnesota Hockey High Performance Player Development Director.

Fifty-six male and female sled hockey players ages 12-32 will take part in the five-day camp, which will include daily practices and games. The purpose of the camp is to identify, train and educate the top sled hockey athletes in the United States.
The U.S. National Developmental Sled Hockey Team, which will compete in various national and international events during the 2011-12 season, will be selected from players at this camp.
Meanwhile, the 2011-12 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team tryouts will take place immediately following the USA Hockey Sled Hockey Player Development Camp, July 22-24 in Rochester, N.Y. The tryouts are open to all disabled sled players 15 years of age or older.
NOTES: Jeff Sauer and Gregg Maranari will serve as the head coaches of USA Hockey's Sled Hockey Player Development Camp while David Hoff and Ron Robichaud will serve as assistant coaches ... Adding to the camp’s staff will be Mike Blabac (Hamburg, N.Y.), Lonnie Hannah (Boerne, Texas), Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.), Kip St. Germaine (East Falmouth, Mass.), Josh Pauls (Green Brook, N.J.), and Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.), all of whom are former U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team members ... Athletes for the camp are chosen by the Player Development Committee from recommendations of sled hockey coaches nationwide.

ST PETERSBURG -- Tampa Bay successfully kicked off the second half with a 9-6 win over first-place Boston, and the victory could not have come at a better time.

Despite throwing three wild pitches, Lincecum (8-7) remained mostly in control. A 27-pitch first inning, which ended with a pair of stranded baserunners, prematurely inflated his pitch count and hastened his departure. The right-hander still struck out seven in six innings while yielding three hits and San Diego's lone run.
