NEW YORK --  Friday night's Rays-Yankees contest was postponed by rain, and will not be made up until Sept. 22, with the starting time to be determined.
A decision on when the rescheduled game would be played resulted in a prolonged delay for the announcement, based on the fact both teams had other wishes for when the game would be played.
According to Rays player representative Evan Longoria, the Rays did not want to play a doubleheader on Saturday, while the Yankees preferred to play a split doubleheader, which, in large part, was motivated by the fact that Derek Jeter is pursuing his 3,000th career hit and is two hits shy. The Yankees' captain now has two remaining games at home before the All-Star break in which to reach the career milestone.

SAN FRANCISCO --  The Giants can consider two options in their efforts to acquire an impact hitter before the July 31 Trade Deadline.
They could take the high-profile approach and obtain right fielder Carlos Beltran from the New York Mets. The five-time All-Star would have a definite effect on the Giants' lineup.
Or San Francisco could take the If-You-Can't-Beat-Him, Grab-Him approach and send the Mets anything and anybody they'd want for Scott Hairston. At least he wouldn't be able to beat the Giants anymore.
Hairston, who seems to think every Giants pitcher throws beach balls, belted a pinch-hit home run off Brian Wilson to open the ninth inning and launched a tiebreaking, three-run uprising as the Mets conquered the Giants, 5-2, on Friday.

Today is the 56th anniversary of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto. Philosopher Bertrand Russell released this plea, signed by 11 prominent scientists, three months after Albert Einstein’s death. Einstein had agreed to put his name to it in his final days. The manifesto urged nations to find peaceful ways to settle differences and to renounce the use of nuclear weapons, which only promised “universal death.” (Linky Link)
