U.S. Women's National Team Blanks Slovakia, 5-0,
in 2011 IIHF World Women's Championship Opener

Team USA Continues Preliminary-Round Action Tomorrow Against Russia

ZURICH - Five different players scored and Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio) turned aside all 10 shots she faced in leading the U.S. Women's National Team to a 5-0 victory over Slovakia to start the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship here today at Hallenstadion. Playing in her first world championship, McLaughlin's shutout was the first of her U.S. career.

"It was a solid first step for us," said Katey Stone, head coach for Team USA and also the head women's ice hockey coach at Harvard University. "We had a lot of offensive punch and I was happy to see Brianne get a world championship win. It was a good game to build on."

The first period proved to be a successful one for first-time IIHF World Women's Championship participant Slovakia. Despite 26 shots by the defending champion Americans, Slovak netminder Zuzana Tomcikova was impenetrable, keeping the score at 0-0 for the full 20 minutes.

The U.S. was able to solve Tomcikova twice in the second stanza to gain a 2-0 lead. The first goal came at the 3:50 mark when Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) tipped Molly Engstrom's (Siren, Wis.) low shot from the right point. Scoring her first-ever goal for Team USA, Josephine Pucci (Pearl River, N.Y.) doubled the U.S. lead at 8:18, putting a one-timer into the net from the mid-slot after Tomcikova dove forward to make a save.

A trio of University of Wisconsin players added tallies in the early half of the final frame to account for the 5-0 final score. Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) put one in from the right post off a cross-crease pass from Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) at :11. Just :08 later, Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) scored, followed by Decker one-timing a pass from Knight at 7:27.

Team USA will continue preliminary-round play tomorrow against Russia at 4 p.m. (10 a.m. EDT).

U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team Edges Russia, 4-3,
at 2011 IIHF World Men's U18 Championship

Boucher Nets Game-Winner Late in Third Period

CRIMMITSCHAU, Germany – J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) scored twice and Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.) netted the game-winning goal with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation, as the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team edged Russia, 4-3, here tonight in the preliminary round of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's U18 Championship. With the win, Team USA remains undefeated through three games of the tournament.

"These were two very good teams and it was a great game for everyone involved," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team. "The game was so tight that it came down to faceoffs and we were fortunate to get the game-winner off of one tonight."

Team USA opened the scoring 7:07 into the opening frame with a goal from Travis Boyd (Hopkins, Minn.). Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) sent a pass from the right boards to Boyd in the slot, who then spun around and lifted the puck past Russian goaltender Andrei Vasilevski. Only 3:55 later, Miller increased the U.S. lead when he fired a wrist shot high over Vasilevski's shoulder for a power-play tally.

When Russia scored at the 5:04 mark of the second period, Team USA answered just over a minute later, when Miller notched his second goal of the game. Boucher fired a shot that was blocked away by Vasilevski, but Miller found the rebound and converted for the score to put the U.S. up, 3-1.

Russia responded to tie the game with less than five minutes left in the third period, but Boucher netted the eventual game-winning goal for Team USA with just 21 seconds remaining in regulation. Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) won an offensive zone faceoff that directed the puck to Boucher, who then fired a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net to give the U.S. a 4-3 victory.

John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 36 saves in the win for the U.S., while Vasilevski stopped 36 shots in the loss for Russia.

The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team finishes preliminary-round play on Tuesday (April 19) against host Germany at 7:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. EDT), at Crimmitschau Arena. The game will be streamed live on FASTHockey.com.

ST. PETERSBURG -- Rays outfielder Johnny Damon left Sunday's game against the Twins with a bruise on the tip of his left ring finger, and with it left the Rays without the player who has been Mr. Clutch over the past week.
Without Damon in the lineup, the Rays were unable to stage their sixth come-from-behind victory of the season as the Twins beat the Rays, 4-2, to end the Rays' five-game winning streak. In doing so, the Twins stopped their losing ways after dropping the past three games to the Rays and four overall, disappointing the 22,426 in attendance at Tropicana Field.

Huff's fourth-inning homer off D-backs starter Barry Enright was one of three Giants long balls on the day, although the defending World Series champs dropped a 6-5 decision to Arizona, which salvaged the final tilt of the three-game weekend series.
