The United States Hockey League announced the schedule for the first round of the 2011 Clark Cup Playoffs.

It came down to the final day of the 480-game regular season schedule to determine playoff positions, but at the end of Saturday night, four matchups had been set for the first round.

The Anderson Cup champion Cedar Rapids RoughRiders will be joined by the Green Bay Gamblers as teams that have earned a bye in the Eastern Conference for the first round. In the Western Conference, the Dubuque Fighting Saints also advance to the second round and the Omaha Lancers earned a win on the final game of the season over the Sioux Falls Stampede to move above the Stampede and earn a first-round bye.

The Waterloo Black Hawks officially secured their postseason berth with a victory in their final regular season contest. The Fargo Force and Lincoln Stars finished with the same amount of points in the standings, but the Force hold the tiebreaker of winning the season series against the Stars to claim the fourth seed.

In the USHL's new expanded playoff format, a best-of-three series will take place in the first round between the #3 and #6 seeds in addition to a matchup between the #4 and #5 seeds. The higher seed will be the host for the duration of the first round games. The winner of each series will advance to the second round which will be re-seeded, ensuring that the highest seed will always play against the lowest remaining seed.

Univeristy of Minnesota Duluth Finishes Season No. 1
in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After capturing its first-ever NCAA title, the University of Minnesota Duluth ends the season as the unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll. The Bulldogs, who defeated No. 4 University of Notre Dame and No. 2 University of Michigan en route to the NCAA championship, collected 510 points and all 34 first-place votes.

Michigan (459), which defeated the University of North Dakota in the semifinal before falling to Minnesota Duluth, retains the No. 2 position, while North Dakota (449) is No. 3. Notre Dame (395) remains at No. 4 and Boston College (363) rounds out the top five.

NOTES: Eight teams remained in the poll throughout the 2010-11 season ... Six teams held the No. 1 spot (Boston College, Boston University, Miami University, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of North Dakota, Yale University). Minnesota Duluth previously held the No. 1 spot for three weeks from Nov. 15 - Dec. 5, 2010 ... The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences in the poll with five ranked programs, while the Central Collegiate Hockey Association boasts four ranked programs and Hockey East and ECAC Hockey each have three ... A total of 19 teams received votes.

ABOUT THE POLL: The 16th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team Tops Finland, 4-2, in Final Tune-Up

Grimaldi Scores Twice, Notches Game-Winning Goal

DRESDEN, Germany – Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, Conn.) recorded two points (1-1), as the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team topped Finland, 4-2, here tonight in its final tune-up prior to the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Under-18 Championship, which runs from April 14-24, in Crimmitschau and Dresden, Germany.

Grimaldi gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead 8:20 into the first period, when he skated from the corner and fired a wrist shot from the bottom of the face-off circle that beat Finland netminder Samu Perhonen on the short side. Haggerty then gave Team USA a 2-0 edge with just 1:13 remaining in the period.

Midway through the second period, Finland cut the U.S. lead in half, but Team USA responded with a power-play goal at the 16:02 mark. J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) passed the puck off the sideboards to Grimaldi, who deked the goaltender and fired a shot into the top of the net to put the U.S. up 3-1 heading into the final frame.

After sending an extra attacker to the ice, Finland scored with just 30 seconds remaining in the regulation, but Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.) scored an empty-net goal to seal Team USA's 4-2 victory.

John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 16 saves for the U.S., while Perhoven stopped 22 shots in the loss for Finland.

The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team opens tournament play on Thursday (April 14) against Switzerland at 7:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. EDT), at Crimmitschau Arena. The game will be streamed live on FASTHockey.com.
