U.S. National Sled Hockey Team Falls to Norway, 5-4,
in World Sledge Hockey Challenge Semifinals

Team USA to Play in Third-Place Game Tomorrow

LONDON, Ont. - Nikko Landeros (Berthoud, Colo.) scored three goals, but the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team fell to Norway, 5-4, in the semifinal round of the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge here this afternoon at the Western Fair Sports Centre.

Norway scored with just 29 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 4-4 tie and emerge with the victory.

"Losing this way, in our last tournament of the season, is heartbreaking," said Ray Maluta, head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. "We need to pick ourselves back up tomorrow and finish the year on a winning note."

Team USA scored the lone goal of the first period with less than one minute remaining in the frame. After Taylor Chace (Hampton Falls, N.H.) created a turnover in the neutral zone, he slid the puck to Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) at the Norway blue line. Page and Greg Shaw (Park City, Utah) jammed the puck through two defenders to a streaking Taylor Lipsett (Richardson, Texas), who snuck a shot under the sled of Norway goalie Roger Johansen and over the goal line.

Norway scored three straight goals in the first eight minutes of the second period, but the U.S. and Landeros responded in the second half of the frame. At 12:29 of the period, Landeros found himself alone in the slot and sent a shot high to the blocker side of Johansen to cut the Norway lead to 3-2. Five minutes later, Landeros connected again, tapping in a long feed from Alexi Salamone (Grand Island, N.Y.) at the far post for a power-play goal.

After an early third-period goal by Norway, Landeros tied the game once again with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. A long clearing attempt by Shaw rolled in front of Landeros at center ice, where the defenseman picked up the loose puck, deked a defender and fired a shot past Johansen's glove.

But Norway's Audun Bakke jammed a loose puck under U.S. netminder Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) less than one minute later for the game-winning goal.

Team USA will play the loser of this evening's game between Canada and Japan in the third-place game tomorrow (April 23) at 10 a.m. EDT. The contest can be seen on FASTHockey.com.

NOTES: Taylor Lipsett was named Team USA's Player of the Game ... 2011 marks the fourth World Sledge Hockey Challenge and the first to be held in London, Ont. Team USA won last year's event by topping Canada, 3-2, in overtime of the title game on Nov. 19, 2009, in Charlottetown, P.E.I. ... Team USA took a 1-0 lead at 2:35 of the first period when Greg Shaw (Park City, Utah) skated in from the left circle and lifted a shot over the glove of Japan goalie Shinobu Fukushima.

Japan tied the score, 1-1, just one minute after Shaw's opening tally. But the U.S. responded with five straight goals to close out the first period, including two each from Landeros and Kevin McKee (Davenport, Iowa). Also connecting was Team USA rookie Dan McCoy (Cheswick, Pa.), who collected a pass from Jimmy Connelly (Galloway, N.J.) and fired a shot just under the crossbar for his third goal of the tournament.

Team USA extended its lead to 7-1 seven minutes into the second period. As the U.S. broke out of its own end, McKee sent a long lead pass between two defenders to Alexi Salamone (Grand Island, N.Y.). Salamone moved the puck from his left to his right stick and tapped a shot past Fukushima and over the goal line. Adam Page (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Josh Pauls (South Plainfield, N.J.) also scored to increase the U.S. advantage to 9-1 after two.

U.S. goalie Justin Kreger (Waterford, Wis.), who relieved starter Steve Cash (Overland, Mo.) at the start of the second period, stopped all six shots he faced, as Team USA held on for the win.

"We now look forward to the opportunity to play for the gold medal on Monday."

Lamoureux-Kolls found the back of the net with a wrister from the slot and Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) buried a shot during a broken play off the faceoff :34 later for a 2-1 U.S. advantage.

Minutes later and with the U.S. back on the power play, Caitlin Cahow (Vinalhaven, Maine) took a shot and Decker knocked her rebound high over the sprawled goaltender at 6:59.

Decker closed out scoring with her second power-play goal of the game at 12:18 of the final frame off a rebound from Lamoureux-Kolls' slap shot.

Team USA Attempts to Capture Third Straight Gold Medal Tomorrow

CRIMMITSCHAU, Germany – Tyler Biggs (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored the game-winner 4:22 into overtime, as the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team topped Canada, 5-4, here tonight in the semifinals of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's U18 Championship. Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.) also notched two goals in the victory, which sent the U.S. to the gold-medal game tomorrow against Sweden at 12:30 p.m. EDT, at Crimmitschau Arena. The game will be streamed live on FASTHockey.com.

Team USA will look to capture its third straight gold medal after garnering back-to-back world titles in 2009 and 2010.

"We are fortunate to have held on for the win against such a good Canadian team," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team. "The puck bounced our way in overtime and now we have to prepare for a talented Sweden team."

Canada opened the scoring early in the first period, but J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) responded for the U.S. midway through the frame. After Team USA blocked a shot, the puck caromed off a U.S. player and into the neutral zone, where Miller picked it up and skated to the net, snapping a shot past Canadian goaltender Malcolm Subban.

Team USA then took a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission, when Miller sent a pass from behind the net to an open Boucher in the slot, who ripped a shot past the outstretched glove of Subban.

The U.S. opened the third period with back-to-back shorthanded goals to gain a 4-1 edge. Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave the U.S. a two-goal cushion 6:43 into period, when he skated with the puck up the right side boards and wristed a shot under the crossbar for the score. Just 33 seconds later, Boucher wired a shot past Subban for his second goal of the night.

Canada narrowed the margin to 4-2 just 1:59 later. Then, still down two goals with two minutes remaining in regulation, Canada took advantage of a power-play opportunity and sent an extra attacker to the ice, notching a 6-on-4 goal at the 18:25 mark of the third. Forty-four seconds later, Canada struck again with an extra attacker to force overtime.

U.S. goaltender John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stopped five shots in the extra frame, before Biggs snapped a shot past Subban to send Team USA to the gold-medal game.

Gibson made 38 saves in the win for the U.S., while Subban stopped 37 shots in the loss for Canada.
