University of Wisconsin Unanimous No. 1
in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll



COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wisconsin, which defeated then-No. 7 University of Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA quarterfinals last weekend, enters the Women's Frozen Four as the unanimous No. 1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll. The Badgers, who claim the top spot for the 11th week in a row, accumulated 190 points and all 19 first-place votes.

Cornell University (171) remains at No. 2 following a win over No. 8 Dartmouth College in the NCAA tournament, while Boston University (140) earns the No. 3 spot after defeating then-No. 5 Mercyhurst College to advance to its first-ever Women's Frozen Four. Boston College (136), which topped then-No. 3 University of Minnesota for the first time in school history, climbs to No. 4.

The NCAA Women's Frozen Four takes place this weekend at Tullio Arena in Erie, Pa., with No. 1 University of Wisconsin facing off against No. 4 Boston College and No. 2 Cornell University facing No. 3 Boston University on Friday (March 18). The winners of the semifinal match-ups will compete on Sunday (March 20) for the NCAA championship.

NOTES: The 2011 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey, will be awarded for the 14th time at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie, Pa. on Saturday (March 19). The three finalists include Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont./Mercyhurst College), Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass./Univ. of Wisconsin) and Kelli Stack (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio/Boston College). 1900 - Ban Johnson, after presiding over a meeting of baseball owners, announced that the new American League would begin play in April with teams in Buffalo, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis.

1964 - Paul Hornung and Alex Karras were reinstated to the NFL after an 11-month suspension for betting on football games.

1991 - The U.S. won all three medals in the world figure skating championship. Kristi Yamaguchi won the championship, Tonya Harding finished second, and Nancy Kerrigan was third.

1996 - Mike Tyson won the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship with a technical knockout of Frank Bruno in the third round.

2000 - WRAL-TV Digital broadcast offered viewers the first opportunity to watch any one of the games played during the NCAA basketball tournament. WRAL broadcast four separate channels with each carrying a different game.

2002 - Brittanie Cecil was hit by a puck while watching a game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena. The 13-year-old died two days later from a rare injury caused when her head snapped back.
