University of Wisconsin Remains No. 1 in USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wisconsin remains No. 1 in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll after twice defeating Bemidji State University last weekend. The Badgers, who boast a 26-2-2 record, accumulated 184 points and 13 first-place votes to earn the top spot for the sixth week in a row.

Cornell University sits at No. 2 with 177 points and six first-place votes after earning a victory over St. Lawrence University and tying Clarkson University, while Boston University remains in the No. 3 spot with 137 points after posting a 1-1-0 record against the University of New Hampshire last week. The University of Minnesota (134) advances one place to No. 4 following a weekend sweep of St. Cloud State University, while Mercyhurst College (124) rounds out the top five with two victories over Wayne State University.

This week features two top-10 match-ups, with No. 3 Boston University and No. 7 Boston College facing off in the 33rd annual Beanpot tournament tonight (Feb. 8), and No. 1 University of Wisconsin hosting No. 8 University of North Dakota in a weekend series.

NOTES: The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences with four ranked programs, while Hockey East boasts three, ECAC Hockey has two ranked teams and College Hockey America has one ... A total of 13 teams received votes.

ABOUT THE POLL: The 14th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women’s College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the four NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

1895 - In Massachusetts, W.G. Morgan invented volleyball.

1895 - The first college basketball game was played as Minnesota State School of Agriculture defeated the Porkers of Hamline College, 9-3.

1900 - Dwight F. Davis put up a new tennis trophy to go to the winner in matches against England. The trophy was a silver cup that weighed 36 pounds.

1924 - Frank Nighbor received the first NHL Hart Trophy. The award, that judges the most valuable player to his team, was the first individual award in the NHL.
