National Team Development Program Weekly Update

U.S. Nat'l Under-18 Team Earn Three Points in USHL Action; Under-17 Team Remains Unbeaten in Last Four USHL Contests

THIS WEEK: The Under-18 Team travels to Hamden, Conn., to face the Quinnipiac University Bobcats on Saturday (Jan. 22). Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at the TD Bank Sports Center. On Sunday (Jan. 23), the U18's take on the Providence College Friars at 7 p.m. ET., at the Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

The Under-17 Team looks to continue its hot streak in the United States Hockey League when it hosts the Sioux Falls Stampede at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 7 p.m. ET.

U18 TEAM EARNS THREE OF FOUR POINTS: John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) stopped all 31 shots he faces and Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif./1-1) and Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif./0-2) posted two-point games as the U.S. National Under-18 Team blanked the Green Bay Gamblers, 3-0, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube (Jan. 14).

The following evening (Jan. 15), Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) made 32 saves and Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, Conn.) notched a goal as the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to the Youngstown Phantoms in a shootout, 2-1, in Ann Arbor. Team USA picked up a point in the standings, gaining three of a possible four points over the weekend.

U17 TEAM WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT IN USHL: Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) scored two goals as the U.S. National Under-17 Team skated to its fourth consecutive victory in USHL play by defeating the Chicago Steel, 5-2, at The Edge Ice Arena. Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) stopped 20 shots for Team USA in the win.

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: R.J. Umberger (Pittsburgh, Pa./1998-200) has scored seven goals in his last 12 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets ... Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska/2000-02) had a pair of assists for the Philadelphia Flyers on Jan. 16, helping lead them to a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers ... In his last five games, Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./2004-06) has scored two goals and registered three assists ... Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas/2007-09) scored the deciding goal in the second period of the Michigan Wolverine's Jan. 14 win over Ferris State ... Four players were named to the American Hockey League's All-Star Classic: Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J./2007-09), Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif./2004-06), Joey Crabb (Anchorage, Alaska/1999-2001) and Ryan Stoa (Bloomington, Minn./2003-05). The Western Conference Co-Coach will be John Hynes who served behind the NTDP bench for seven years before joining Wilkes--Barre/Scranton.

1911 - The first Monte Carlo motor rally took place.

1973 - The AFC beat the NFC 35-31 in the NFL Pro Bowl in Dallas. The game had been played in Los Angeles since 1942.

1979 - The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys 35-31 in Super Bowl XIII. The Steelers became the first team to win three Super Bowls.

1985 - Dennis Potvin tied Bobby Orr's career record of 270 NHL goals. Potvin ended up with 310 career goals.

1986 - Former major-league player, Randy Bass, became the highest-paid baseball player in Japanese history. Bass signed a three-year contract for $3.25 million. He played for the Hanshin Tigers.

1989 - Wayne Gretzky passed Marcel Dionne to become the NHL's second all time scorer.

1990 - John McEnroe was disqualified and expelled for throwing a tantrum and using abusive language at an official while leading Mikael Pernfors in the Australian Open. He was the first person to be thrown out of a Grand Slam in 27 years. He was fined $6,500 and kicked out of the tournament.

1995 - John Stockton became the NBA's all-time career assist leader when he got his 9,922nd.

1997 - Don Mattingly (New York Yankees) officially announced his retirement.

1997 - Michael Jordan (Chicago Bulls) scored 51 points against the New York Knicks.

2002 - Michael Jordan (Washington Wizards) played his first game in Chicago as a visiting player. The Wizards beat the Bulls 77-69.

2010 - Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers) became the 15th player in NBA history to reach 25,000 career points and the youngest to hit the milestone. He did it 35 days faster than Wilt Chamberlain.
