National Team Development Program Weekly Update

U.S. Nat'l Under-18 and Under-17 Teams Earn Three Points in USHL Standings; Both Teams Continue League Action This Weekend 

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team comes home to the Ann Arbor (Mich.) Ice Cube as it hosts the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) RoughRiders on Dec. 10 and the Chicago Steel on Dec. 11. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. EST for both contests.

The Under-17 Team plays three games in four nights, starting on Dec. 9 when it faces Cedar Rapids at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube at 7 p.m. EST. Team USA then travels to the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis the following night (Dec. 10) to take on the Indiana Ice at 7:05 p.m. EST, and returns home on Dec. 11 to close out the home-and-home series against the Ice at 3 p.m. EST at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

U18 TEAM DROPS TWO TOUGH ROAD GAMES: Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) scored once and John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 42 saves, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to the Indiana Ice, 2-1, in overtime at the Pepsi Coliseum.

Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) made 35 saves, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team dropped a close battle with the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-3, at the Covelli Centre. Grimaldi scored his second goal in as many nights and Travis Boyd (Hopkins, Minn.) and J.T. Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio) each added goals in the loss.

U17 TEAM SPLITS ON THE ROAD: Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) notched a goal and collected an assist, and Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 33 saves as the U.S. National Under-17 Team outlasted the Lincoln Stars, 4-3, in a shootout at the Lincoln Ice Box. Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored the lone goal in the shootout.

Jared Rutledge (Chicago, Ill.) made 33 saves and the U.S. National Under-17 Team played tough, but it fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-2, at Young Arena. Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif.) and Kyle Osterberg (Lakeville, Minn.) notched goals in the effort.

U.S. NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAM NOTES: USA Hockey announced the preliminary roster of 29 players that were invited to compete for a spot on the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team that will participate in the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Buffalo and Niagara, New York from Dec. 26, 2010 to Jan. 5, 2011. U18 forward Rocco Grimaldi was one of the players named to the camp roster. Eighteen of the 29 players named to the preliminary roster are all National Team Development Program alumni: Ryan Bourque (2007-09), Chris Brown (2007-09), Jack Campbell (2008-10), Adam Clendening (2008-10), Jerry D'Amigo (2007-09), Emerson Etem (2008-09), Justin Faulk (2008-10), Derek Forbort (2009-10), Andy Iles (2009-10), Jon Merrill (2008-10), Jeremy Morin (2007-09), Matt Nieto (2008-10), Kyle Palmieri (2007-09), John Ramage (2008-09), Brandon Saad (2009-10), Drew Shore (2007-09), Jason Zucker (2008-10).

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: Colorado's John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind./1997-99) is tied for second among National Hockey League defensemen with 26 points (5-21), while Edmonton's Ryan Whitney (Scituate, Mass./2000-01) is tied for fifth with 21 points (0-21) ... Colorado defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk has continued his hot start in the NHL, notching another three points in his last three games, bringing his total to 14 points (4-10) in 16 games played this year ... Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./2007-09) scored in the tenth shootout round against the Oilers to lift the Ducks to victory Tuesday night (Dec. 7) ... NTDP alumni Shattenkirk (2nd), Fowler (T-3rd) Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis./2001-03/4th) and Jamie McBane (Faribault, Minn./2004-06/6th) are all among the top 6 American-born NHL rookie scorers ... Jimmy Howard (Ogdensburg, N.Y./2001-02) is ranked second among goalies with 15 wins, compiling a 2.52 GAA and .916 SV% in 20 games played for the Detroit Red Wings.
