National Team Development Program Weekly Update

U.S. Nat'l Under-18 and Under-17 Teams Back on the Road This Weekend

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team hits the road for North Dakota as it takes on the Fargo Force on Dec. 17. at 8:35 EST at the Urban Plains Center. Team USA then turns its focus to the University of North Dakota the next night (Dec. 18) when it faces the Fighting Sioux at 8:07 EST at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The Under-17 Team has a lighter schedule this weekend, with only one game against the Indiana Ice on Dec. 17. Puck drop is set for 7:05 EST at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis. Last weekend, the Under-17 Team played three games in four nights, going 1-2-0.

U18 TEAM SPLITS THE WEEKEND: Jake McCabe (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Adam Reid (Chino Hills, Calif.) each scored a goal and John Gibson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made 27 saves as the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 3-2, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, Conn.) netted two goals and added an assist, Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.) collected a goal and an assist and Tyler Biggs (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched two goals, as the U.S. National Under-18 Team downed the Chicago Steel, 8-1, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) turned aside 30 shots in the victory.

U17 TEAM EARNS FIRST SHUTOUT; ICED BY ICE: Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 36 saves and Frankie Vatrano (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored twice as the U.S. National Under-17 Team blanked the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 3-0, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. It was the first shutout for Team USA this season and the only time Cedar Rapids has been held scoreless.

Mason Jobst (Zionsville, Ind.) recorded two points (1-1) in his Team USA debut, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Indiana Ice, 6-2, at the Pepsi Coliseum in Indianapolis. Bye Selected to IIHF Hall of Fame Class of 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Karen Bye Dietz, two-time member of the U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, was today selected to the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame Class of 2011.

"Karyn was a dominating force on the international stage for more than a decade and her play served as an inspiration for young girls, not only in the United States, but across the world," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "Her selection is a fitting tribute to an extraordinary career."

Bye Dietz joins Tord Lundstrom (SWE), Bohumil Modry (CZE), Kalevi Numminen (FIN), Ladislav Trojak (SVK) and Doru Tureanu (ROM) in making up the Class of 2011. She will become the fifth female inducted into the 160-member Hall of Fame and the 19th American. The induction ceremony will take place in Bratislava, Slovakia, on May 15, 2011, during the IIHF World Men's Championship.

Bye Dietz’s inspirational play and offensive skills paced Team USA to six International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Championship silver medals, as well as gold and silver medals at the Olympic Winter Games.

As an alternate captain for the 1998 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team, Bye Dietz led the team with five goals in helping to capture the first-ever gold medal awarded in the sport at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. She subsequently was a member of the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team that won the silver in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she tallied three goals and three assists in five games.

Bye Dietz competed in six world championships dating back to 1992 and still ranks third all-time for the U.S. with 27 career goals in 30 games played. Overall, she competed in 175 games for Team USA, notching 110 goals and 119 assists for 229 points to rank fifth on the all-time scoring list.

Bye Dietz was also an accomplished collegiate player, amassing 164 points in 87 games at the University of New Hampshire. After graduating from UNH in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, she earned her master’s degree while playing two more years at Concordia University in Montreal.

In 1998, Bye Dietz was a finalist for the Women's Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year Award, was named USA Hockey’s Women’s Player of the Year for the second time and was inducted into the University of New Hampshire Hall of Fame.

After her playing career ended, the River Falls, Wis., native worked for the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild in its grassroots program. She continues to take part in numerous speaking engagements and teaches fitness classes at her local YMCA. In addition, she serves as the color commentator for the Minnesota Girls State High School Hockey Tournament.

Bye Dietz currently resides in Hudson, Wis., with her husband, Calvin, and their two children, Tatum and Brody.

Ogrean Named to U.S. Olympic Committee Board of Directors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey, was today named to the U.S. Olympic Committee board of directors. He is one of five new directors, as announced by the USOC board of directors following its meeting today in Redwood City, Calif.

Joining Ogrean as new members are Robbie Bach, James Benson, Nina Kemppel and Susanne Lyons. All five were recommended to the board by its nominating and governance committee following an application phase, a vetting process and individual interviews.

Ogrean, who is in his second stint as executive director for USA Hockey, has been part of the Olympic movement for over 30 years, having worked in administration, fundraising, marketing and public relations for various entities.

Since returning to USA Hockey in August of 2005, Ogrean has helped the organization reach new heights, including an unprecedented partnership with the National Hockey League. Under his leadership, USA Hockey created a new department for membership development that has helped in the resurgence of growth in youth hockey in the U.S.; introduced the revolutionary American Development Model, which provides associations nationwide a blueprint for optimal athlete development for the first time ever; began an annual three-day nationwide celebration called Hockey Weekend Across America to bring additional exposure to the sport; focused efforts on raising the profile of the USA Hockey Foundation; and helped ensure the sustainability of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame by negotiating a deal that resulted in USA Hockey becoming the legal entity governing the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ogrean previously served as executive director of USA Hockey from 1993-99 and began his career in the sports industry with the organization as its director of public relations in 1978.
