U.S. National Junior Team Tops Norway, 6-1, in Final World Junior Championship Pre-Tournament Game
Team USA to Begin IIHF World Junior Championship Play Sunday
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - Brock Nelson (Minneapolis, Minn./Univ. of North Dakota) scored two first-period goals, as the U.S. National Junior Team topped Norway, 6-1, here tonight before an overflow crowd at Jamestown Savings Bank Arena.
Tonight's game was the last of three pre-tournament games designed to prepare the U.S. National Junior Team for the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, which will take place Sunday (Dec. 26) through Jan. 5 in Buffalo, N.Y.
"It was a great atmosphere here in Jamestown tonight and we thank the community for their support," said Keith Allain, head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team. I thought we took a step forward tonight and we're looking forward to opening the tournament against Finland on Sunday."
Team USA jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the first period. From behind the net, Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, N.Y./Toronto Marlies) chipped the puck in front, where Drew Shore (Denver, Colo./Univ. of Denver) powered a shot on goal. Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) picked up the rebound and lifted it over Norway goalie Lars Volden.
Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass./Quebec Remparts) gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead when he blasted home a rebound off of a shot by John Ramage (Chesterfield, Mo./Univ. of Wisconsin) midway through the opening period. Nelson's two goals from in tight gave Team USA a 4-0 advantage after one.
The U.S. extended its lead to 5-0 with five minutes left in the second period on the power play. Justin Faulk (South St. Paul, Minn.) let go a hard slap shot that flew untouched past Volden and into the net.
Following a five-on-three power-play goal by Norway early in the third period, D'Amigo closed out the scoring with five minutes remaining when he sped around Norway's defense and lifted a shot into the top corner of the net.
Team USA will play its first preliminary-round game of the IIHF World Junior Championship on Sunday (Dec. 26) against Finland. The game, to be televised on NHL Network U.S. and streamed live on FASTHockey.USAHockey.com, will start at 8:00 p.m. EST.
NOTES: Team USA finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while Norway was 1-for-5 with the man advantage ... BUFFALO, N.Y. - John Ramage (Chesterfield, Mo./Univ. of Wisconsin) was named captain of the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team, and will be joined by alternate captains Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass./Quebec Remparts) and Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y./Rockford IceHogs).
All three players were members of last year's U.S. squad that captured the gold medal at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Regina and Saskatoon, Sask.
