Team USA had three additional man-advantage opportunities in the frame and a total of 15 shots, but was unable to solve Grahn again as the score remained 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Five minutes later, Seth Jones (Plano, Texas) scored a four-on-three power-play goal to put Team USA up, 3-0. Thomas Di Pauli (Woodridge, Ill.) won the faceoff back to Skjei, who sent the puck over to Jones at the left point. Jones then fired a slap shot that sailed past Vasilevskiy.

Russia scored the lone second-period goal, but the U.S. notched three goals in the final frame to complete the 6-1 victory. Miles Koules (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored two goals 1:29 apart to increase Team USA's lead to 5-1 in the first five minutes of the period.

With 40 seconds left in regulation, U.S. goaltender Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) passed the puck up to Darcy as he was skating through the neutral zone. Darcy then stickhandled around the Russia defense and fired a wrist shot that beat Vasilevskiy high on the blocker side.

U.S. Junior Select Team Captures Title at 2010 World Junior A Challenge with a 6-4 Victory over Canada East

Team USA Erases Three-Goal Deficit to Win Third Straight Championship

PENTICTON, B.C. - The U.S. Junior Select Team erased a three-goal deficit en route to a 6-4 victory over Canada East in the championship game of the 2010 World Junior A Challenge. The win gave Team USA its third straight World Junior A Challenge title.

Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) scored a pair of goals including the game-tying third-period tally, while Jimmy Mullin (Cincinnati, Ohio) netted the game-winning goal with just three minutes remaining to complete the U.S. comeback.

"Our goal for the entire tournament was to 'climb the mountain,'" said P.K. O'Handley, head coach of the U.S. Junior Select Team. "We were naturally concerned, down 4-1. But we stuck with our plan and came out on top. This was one of my best hockey experiences of my coaching career."

After Canada East took a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the contest, Team USA knotted the score four minutes later on the power play. Seth Ambroz (New Prague, Minn.) parked in front of the Canadian net and connected off of a centering feed from Max McCormick (De Pere, Wis.). But Canada East notched a power-play goal of its own to take a 2-1 lead after one period.

Canada East extended its lead to 4-1 with a pair of quick backhand goals in the first five minutes of the middle frame. But Team USA responded with two late second-period goals. Sam Warning (Chesterfield, Mo.) redirected a Brian Cooper (Anchorage, Alaska) slap shot for his second goal of the tournament at 15:01 of the second.

Then, with just one minute remaining in the period, Czarnik fired a quick snap shot over the glove of Canada East goalie Jordan Ruby to cut the Canada East lead to 4-3 after two.

After 15 scoreless minutes in the third period, Team USA erupted with three goals in less than four minutes. Czarnik potted his second of the night with another high, hard shot from the slot. Then, just 40 seconds later, Mullin chipped his tournament-leading sixth goal between Ruby and the near post to give the U.S. its first lead of the game, 5-4.

Michael Parks' (O'Fallon, Mo.) empty-net goal sealed the victory for Team USA. U.S. goalie Casey DeSmith (Rochester, N.H.), who replaced starter Zane Gothberg (Thief River Falls, Minn.) early in the second period, stopped all eight shots he faced in the win. Meanwhile, Ruby made 37 saves in the loss.

AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Jimmie Johnson didn't have the fastest car in Sunday's Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway -- at the end of the day, race winner and pole-sitter Carl Edwards did.

Johnson, the four-time defending Cup Series champion, didn't lead a lap. Denny Hamlin, ahead in the points and seeking his first title, led a race-high 190 laps.

Ultimately, none of that mattered. Short on fuel at the end of a race he had dominated, Hamlin short-pitted with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch on Lap 298 of 312, while Edwards, Johnson and Kevin Harvick were conserving fuel after pit stops under caution on Lap 224.

All three won their gambles, and Hamlin, who finished 12th, saw his lead over second-place Johnson shrink from 33 points to 15 entering next Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Harvick is third in the standings, 46 points behind Hamlin.

Edwards crossed the finish line 4.77 seconds ahead of runner-up Ryan Newman to break a winless streak of 70 races, dating to Homestead in November 2008. Edwards squeezed 88 laps out of his last tank of gas to win for the 17th time in his career, completing a sweep of a weekend that also included a victory in Saturday's Nationwide Series race.

Joey Logano and Greg Biffle finished third and fourth, respectively, followed by Johnson and Harvick. Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Kurt Busch and Jamie McMurray completed the top 10.
