The first place Calgary Stampeders tightened their hold on first place in the CFL West Sunday with a 34-26 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium in Regina.
The Riders grabbed the early lead with a pair of majors. The first score, a 25 yard Darian Durant pass to Weston Dressler was set up by a 20 yard pass to Wes Cates with 10:43 left in the first and came at the end of a 10 play, 67 yard drive. The second, a 11 yard Durant to Chris Getzlaf pass, came with 8:05 to go in the opening quarter and just one play after those two hooked up on an 85 yard catch and run that took the ball from the Rider 14 to the Calgary 11. Luca Congi converted after both, putting Saskatchewan on top 14-0. The Stampeders answered back with 2:08 remaining in the first, on an 11 yard Joffrey Reynolds run. Rob Maver converted, making it 14-7 Riders after one.
Maver kicked a 39 yard field goal 3:30 into the second quarter, then after an Eddie Johnson punt rolled out at the Calgary one, Burke Dales conceded a safety with 54 seconds left. Johnson, subbing for Congi, who was injured on a blocked field goal earlier in the quarter, booted a 35 yard field goal with 3 seconds 'til two quarter time, building a 19-10 halftime lead for the Riders.
The Stampders would close to within 2 just shy of the midway point of the third quarter, thanks to a 13 play, 80 yard drive, capped by a Reynolds 3 yard run. Maver kicked the convert with 7:58 left in the third to make it a 19-17 game in favor of Saskatchewan. Then, with 2:28 to go in the third, Romby Bryant caught a 17 yard touchdown pass from Henry Burris and with the Maver convert, Calgary would take a 24-19 lead into the final quarter.
The Stamps' ball control offense ate precious time off the clock, but fumbled the ball away around the 8 minute mark.After Durant rambled for 35 yards, backside pressure forced him to fumble with 6:27 left, with Calgary's Corey Mace running the fumble back 60 yards for a major score. Maver's convert made the Stamps' advantage 31-19. The Riders would respond, with Durant finding Getzlaf for a 64 yard catch and run score. Johnson converted with 4:53 left and Saskatchewan was within 5, at 31-26. Calgary would quickly move into Rider territory, ripping off significant chunks of yardage on several plays. The Ponies would move to the Saskatchewan 11, where Maver would kick it home for 3 big points with 1:35 to go in regulation time, giving Calgary a 34-26 lead. The Riders punched right back with a big catch by Jason Clermont, but gave back 9 yards on a QB sack. Durant, rolling out of trouble, was picked off, and the Stampeders would run out the clock to win the game 34-26.
For Calgary, Henry Burris was 19-of-26 passing for 254 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. Romby Bryant caught a touchdown pass, Joffrey Reynolds ran for two touchdowns, Corey Mace ran back a fumble for a major score, and Rob Maver kicked 2 field goals and 4 converts. For Saskatchewan, Darian Durant was 15-of-29 passing for 341 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Chris Getzlaf caught 5 passes for 201 yards and 2 touchdowns, Weston Dressler caught a touchdown pass, Luca Congi kicked two converts, and Eddie Johnson kicked a field goal and a convert.
With the win, the Stampeders improve to 11-4 for 22 points and the Riders slip to 9-6 for 18 points. Saskatchewan is at Edmonton on Saturday, October 23rd at 7:00pm EDT. Calgary hosts BC on Friday, October 22nd at 10:00pm EDT.
