U.S. National Under-17 Team Drops 4-1 Decision to Dubuque
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ryan Hartman's (West Dundee, Ill.) third period tally wasn't enough as the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 4-1, here today at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
Dubuque jumped out to an early lead scoring at 5:57 in the first period. The Fighting Saints added to their lead with three unanswered goals in the second period, giving them a 4-0 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Hartman put Team USA on the board when he banged the puck past Dubuque goaltender Matt Morris at 10:58 in the third period. The puck was chipped deep into the zone by Matt Grzelcyk (Charlestown, Mass.) and scooped up by Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill.), who found Hartman in front of net for the score.
The U.S. was unable to capatalize on the goal and Dubuque skated away with the 4-1 victory.
Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) stopped 25 shots for Team USA in the loss, while Morris made 27 saves for Dubuque in their win.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team will face the Chicago Steel tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 10) at 3:00 p.m. ET, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
NOTES: Dubuque forwards Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga./2006-09) and Shane Sooth (Canyon County, Calif./2008-10), as well as defensemen Tyler Amburgey (Rowlett, Texas/2007-09) all previously played for the National Team Development Program.

A sometimes daring, and overall steady, ball-control offense helped the Toronto Argonauts beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday night 24-19, in front of 30,048 fans at Taylor Field in Regina.
Toronto took their opening possession and went 69 yards in 11 plays, getting a 17 yard field goal from Justin Medlock, and with 9:22 left in the first, took a 3-0 lead. On their next possession, Medlock recorded a single on a missed 50 yard field goal, putting the Double Blue up 4-0 with 5:41 to go in the first. The lead would grow to 11-0 moments later when Jeremy Unertl ran his first-ever CFL interception back 69 yards for a major score. Medlock added the convert with 3:23 remaining in the opening quarter. The first quarter would end on a Eddie Johnson 56 yard punt single for the Riders, and Toronto's lead was 11-1 after the opening 15 minutes.
Saskatchewan was in business with a bit over 9 minutes left in the first half, as Tad Kornegay ran an interception back to the Argo 30. On the third play of the possession, a bullet pass to Andy Fantuz, along with a facemask penalty, put the Riders at the Toronto 1. Wes Cates would score his league-leading 15th touchdown of the season from there and with the Luca Congi convert, the Argo lead was down to 3 at 11-8, with 7:31 remaining 'til two quarter time. Saskatchewan would get the ball right back as the Boatmen fumbled away the kick return at the 23. On the third play of the possession, Neil Hughes would go in motion across the formation and catch a swing pass from Darian Durant, rumbling in from the 8 for the touchdown. Congi's convert with just under 6 minutes left in the half gave the Roughriders a 15-11 lead. Medlock would come on to kick a 48 yard field goal into the teeth of a stiff wind for Toronto to end the first half, with Saskatchewan on top, 15-14.
Another Medlock field goal, this one from 35 yards with 3:38 gone in the third, put the Argonauts back on top, 17-15. Johnson, punting with the wind for the Riders, drilled a 69 yard punt single through the endzone, cutting the deficit to 17-16, with 9:24 remaining in the third.
A Toronto turnover in the early moments of the fourth gave Saskatchewan the ball at the Argo 29. Two plays would net minus-6 yards, leaving it to Congi to kick a 42 yard field goal. However, the kick was blocked and Toronto would hold on to their one-point lead.
Jeremaine Copeland's third touchdown of the season, on a 27 yard pass from Cleo Lemon, came on a drive that featured a gutsy direct snap fake on a third and short punt situation. Medlock kicked the convert, boosting the Double Blue to a 24-16 lead with 8:16 remaining in regulation time. Congi would get 3 back for the Riders with a 42 yard field goal, slicing the Toronto lead to 5, at 24-19, with just 2:37 left. The Argos would control the ball on their next possession, advancing deep into Saskatchewan territory, running out the clock and winning the game 24-19.
For Toronto, Cleo Lemon was 17-for-26 passing for 150 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception, Jeremaine Copeland caught a touchdown pass, Jeremy Unertl ran an interception back for a major score and Justin Medlock kicked 3 field goals, 2 converts and a single. For the Riders, Darian Durant was 19-for-34 passing for 210 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, Neil Hughes caught a touchdown pass, Wes Cates ran for a major, Luca Congi kicked a field goal and 2 converts and Eddie Johnson kicked a pair of punt singles.
With the win, the Argonauts even their record at 7-7. The loss drops Saskatchewan to 9-5. Next up for the Riders is a home game against the West leading Calgary Stampeders on Sunday, October 17th. Kickoff is set for 4:00pm EDT. Toronto hosts Hamilton on Friday, October 15th, at 7:30pm EDT
