The Tampa Bay Juniors MJHL team began their season with a pair of games against the Palm Beach Hawks at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Center this past weekend.
On Saturday, the Juniors built leads of 2-0 and 6-3, before dropping a 10-7 decision. Tampa Bay's Patrick Rodgers had 2 goals and 2 assists and Dustin Disbro had a goal and 2 assists. And despite allowing 10 goals, Evan Weiss played well, making several big saves amongst his 44 saves. Sebastian Romeo was the big gun for Palm Beach with 4 goals.
On Sunday, Palm Beach never trailed, skating to a 5-2 win. Daniel Clifford scored both Tampa Bay goals, while Braxton Schulz made 39 saves. 5 different players scored goal for Palm Beach.
The MJHL juniors play twice this coming weekend. On Friday, they'll host the USF Bulls in an exhibition match and on Saturday, it's back to MJHL action when the Florida Eels visit Ellenton. Game time both nights is 8:00pm EDT. Tickets are $5, with 12 and under free. They're available at the door. Tampa Bay hits the road for the first time this season on September 25th at 7:30pm EDT and on Sunday, September 26th at 11:00am EDT to play the Atlanta Knights.
Tampa Bay Juniors' SEJHL team was in action over the weekend, and they too dropped a pair of games to the Palm Beach Hawks.
On Saturday, the Hawks scored early and often, rolling to an 11-2 win. Nick Howell scored both Tampa Bay goals and Jordan Kruger made 47 saves, many being of five-star quality. Brad Knight had 2 goals and 1 assist for Palm Beach.
On Sunday, Justin Kapelmaster made 23 saves, leading Palm Beach to a 4-0 win. Nick Mucerino scored twice and added a pair of assists for the Hawks and Arthur Savander scored twice. Dominic Calandra showed flashes of brilliance in the Tampa Bay net, making 40 saves.
The next action for the SEJHL Juniors is Saturday and Sunday, September 25th and 26th in Atlanta against the Knights. Faceoff is set for 4:30pm EDT on the 25th, and 8:00am on the 26th.

TORONTO -- There are times in baseball, and life in general, when taking one step back can result in two steps forward.
In regard to Rays starting pitcher Wade Davis, this was exactly the case.
On the heels of a six-run fourth inning -- capped by a Brad Hawpe grand slam -- Davis cruised seamlessly through seven strong innings on Saturday. The Rays' offense, unlike the previous night, kept the Jays out of comeback mode, winning the contest by a 13-1 margin.

TORONTO -- Nothing lasts forever.
After Sunday's 5-4 heartbreaking loss to the Blue Jays, no one was more understanding of that fact than Rays closer Rafael Soriano -- the man who served up a two-run walk-off home run to Adam Lind.
"He hit a good pitch," Soriano said. "I don't know how he hit the ball like that. To me, I feel all right. (You can't) be perfect every time."

Notes: Tonight's pitching matchup has David Price(17-6, 2.87) on the mound for the Rays against the Yankees' CC Sabathia(19-6, 3.14).....Unbelievably, but not surprisingly, with the Rays, 1/2 game behind New York and hosting thye Yankees tonight, there's plenty of good seats still available. Also not suprisingly, Manager Joe Maddon rips the fans a new one. "If you were truly a baseball person, and I believe there are enough of those around the Tampa Bay area, that if you had this opportunity to go and see it in person, to not -- and again, we're pretty reasonable in regard to our pricing, parking and everything else -- that would be very disappointing actually." Well aware of the reasons preventing individuals from attending a game, Maddon said simply, "It's about supporting your group, (and) how much that matters."....The Rays have won six of the 11 meetings between the two teams this season, with the squads splitting the six games at Tropicana Field....Price is on pace to establish a new Rays franchise record for a starting pitcher with his 2.87 ERA. The previous low is Scott Kazmir's 3.24 in 2006. Price has already smashed the franchise record for wins in a season, which was 14 (Rolando Arrojo in 1998, James Shields and Edwin Jackson in 2008). ....Since their eight-game winning streak, the Yankees are just 1-6.

SAN DIEGO -- Tim Lincecum did everything he could Sunday to bring the Giants a victory.
His performance concluded and mirrored the Giants' efforts during their crucial 10-day trip, when they did virtually everything they could to earn a postseason berth.
Lincecum pitched seven slick innings and stroked a two-run single to lead San Francisco past the San Diego Padres, 6-1. The Giants' ninth victory in 12 games pulled them virtually even with the Padres atop the National League West standings for the second time in three days.

Notes: Barry Zito(8-12, 4.14) goes to the mound tonight for the Giants against the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw(11-10, 2.99)....Aaron Rowand and Cody Ross will bear watching in this three-game series. The veteran outfielders should be in the mix to man center field in place of Andres Torres, who is sidelined for 10-14 days after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. Prior to the surgery, Torres was mired in a 5-for-47 slide at the plate in his previous 12 games....Tim Lincecum racked up his 200th strikeout Sunday, marking the third consecutive season he's done that....The Giants finished their 10-game road trip with a 7-3 record....The Giants' 1-0 loss at PETCO Park on Saturday marked the 19th such final score at the Padres' digs since it opened in 2004. That's the most in that stretch, four more than the 15 at Dodger Stadium.

RICHMOND, Va. -- Pole-sitter Kevin Harvick held off Nationwide Series points-leader Brad Keselowski during a 40-lap run to the finish to win Friday night's Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.
In the first race at Richmond and third overall with NASCAR's new Nationwide car, Harvick crossed the finish line .256 seconds ahead of Keselowski, who extended his championship lead to 373 points over Carl Edwards, who ran 10th. Trevor Bayne finished third, tying his career-best. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. came home fourth, followed by Reed Sorenson.
The victory was Harvick's third of the season and 37th of his career, third all time in the series. The owner/driver of Kevin Harvick Inc. led 170 of the 250 laps and was elated with the progress his No. 33 team had made with the new car.
Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer, Paul Menard, Kyle Busch and Edwards completed the top 10. A snafu in the pits cost Busch a chance for a record-11th win this season. Under caution on Lap 205, the quick-fill nozzle on one of Busch's fuel cans broke off and remained attached to the car as Busch left pit road.
Penalized for taking equipment from the pits, Busch restarted 21st on Lap 211 and worked his way up to ninth before the race ended.

RICHMOND, Va. -- He's back -- and just in time.
Denny Hamlin claimed the top seed in the Chase for the Sprint Cup with a convincing victory in Saturday night's Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
Hamlin warded off a strong challenge from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch to win his series-leading sixth race of the season, worth 60 bonus points as the Chase begins on Sept. 19 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Busch rolled home second, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and Marcos Ambrose.
Clint Bowyer secured the final place in the Chase with a sixth-place run. All Bowyer needed to clinch was finish 28th, even if Ryan Newman, his closest pursuer, had won the race and led the most laps. As it turned out, Newman finished 11th and didn't lead a lap.
Juan Montoya, A.J. Allmendinger, Kevin Harvick and pole-sitter Carl Edwards completed the top 10.
