ST. PETERSBURG -- Hope lived eternal for the Rays in the bottom of the 10th Tuesday night, even if Mariano Rivera occupied the mound for the Yankees.

Carl Crawford stood on second with one out with Matt Joyce up to bat. The Rays had already erased a 6-0 Yankees lead, so what was a run against the game's greatest closer?

Then Joyce flied to right. Crawford tagged and took off for third, but Yankees right fielder Greg Golson threw a strike to Alex Rodriguez at third, and Crawford was out -- ballgame over. And just like that, the Yankees had an 8-7 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field in front of a crowd of 28,713.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Tonight's pitching matchup has James Shields(13-12, 4.98 ) on the mound for the Rays against the Yankees' Phil Hughes(16-7, 4.26).....The last time Shields pitched against the Yankees(August 1), he had a quality outing, striking out 11 over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over CC Sabathia. However, he is 1-1 with a 7.31 ERA in his past three starts....Garza has lost 9 of his last 10 decisions against the Yankees....Evan Longoria has 44 doubles this season and needs three more doubles to pass Aubrey Huff for the franchise's single-season record for two-baggers....The Rays are 7-6 against the Yankees this season....Carlos Pena has 19 home runs against the Yankees since 2007, eight more than any other player during that span. He has three hits in his past 40 at-bats....Joaquin Benoit has not allowed a run in 49 of 57 appearances....The Rays and Yankees have been within 2 1/2 each other in the standings for the past 50 days....Tampa Bay is 44-27 at home, including a record of 24-8 since July 1....Overall, the Rays lead the Major Leagues with a 51-38 mark against teams with a .500 record or better.

Today is Felt Hat Day. (On this day, man traditionally put away their felt hats.)

SAN FRANCISCO -- Five Giants pitchers combined to one-hit the Dodgers on Tuesday night, and usually a performance of that caliber is good enough for a victory.

Instead, a wild sixth inning featuring a hit batter, two walks and an error on a makeable play was the difference, as Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw outshone San Francisco's collective effort with his first career shutout to beat the Giants, 1-0, at AT&T Park.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Matt Cain(11-10, 3.19) goes to the mound tonight for the Giants against the Dodgers' Chad Billingsley(11-9, 3.65)....Cain has won four straight starts while sporting a 3.68 ERA over that span. Like Sandoval, he usually benefits from being at home: Cain has a 2.70 ERA at AT&T Park this season. ... Freddy Sanchez was in the lineup Tuesday, but said some fluid buildup in his surgically repaired left knee perhaps could need to be drained as soon as after the game. He went 2-for-4 and, after singling in ninth, was pinch-run for....Los Angeles and San Francisco will have their last head-to-head matchup of 2010 on Thursday. Entering play Wednesday, the clubs had split their first 16 matchups evenly, 8-8....Major League Baseball's regular-season schedules for 2011 were announced Tuesday. In Interleague Play next season, the Dodgers will oppose the Angels, Twins, Indians and Tigers. Subbing their own nearby rival, the A's, fellow NL West competitor the Giants will also face the trio of American League Central clubs.

Reggie Bush has given back his 2005 Heisman Trophy to, in his words, not stain "the dignity of this award." Bush returned the award in response to the ongoing fallout over receiving improper benefits while playing college football for the University of Southern California.

My question: At this point, what difference does it make? I say it makes no difference at all. What now? Is the Heisman Committee going to call Vince Young (who finished second in the polling that year) and give it to him? Leave it vacant? Or put it in a box of Cracker Jack and whover gets it....Well, you get the idea.

This is all just dumb.
