NEW YORK -- "Godfather II" it wasn't. Instead, the highly anticipated David Price-CC Sabathia sequel felt a little like "Smokey and the Bandit II."

But Rays fans would give Thursday night's contest in the Bronx two thumbs up.

September's second installment of Price vs. Sabathia did not live up to its advanced billing. Instead, a pitching matchup with warts materialized. And Price came out on top, thanks to his teammates, who pounded the Yankees for seven runs in the sixth en route to a 10-3 win with 47,646 watching at Yankee Stadium.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Jeff Niemann (10-7, 4.48) starts tonight for the Rays. He's opposed by Seattle's Jason Vargas (9-11, 3.75)....The Rays aren't taking any chances. Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon sent Niemann home early to get sufficient rest for Friday's series opener, and the Rays have reason to believe that the former first-round Draft pick is ready to turn the corner. "He felt really good about his workout the other day," said Maddon. "He was about as upbeat as I've seen him in a while. [Pitching coach Jim] Hickey felt the same way. He thought it was for real. We'll see how it all works out tomorrow. If you're watching that game tomorrow and he's throwing his fastball where he wants to, he'll throw six or seven innings tomorrow."....Tampa Bay's victory over the Yankees on Thursday gave the Rays a 10-8 advantage in the season series and thus the first tiebreaker to decide the division if the teams are tied at the end of the year. ... The Rays finish the season with series against Baltimore and Kansas City....The Rays are 40-12 in front of home crowds of 30,000-plus since the start of the 2008 season -- including 9-3 this year.

CHICAGO -- If the Giants aren't one of baseball's most dangerous teams, they rank among the weirdest.

Only the Giants, it seems, can remain offensively challenged for several games at a time, then interrupt that stretch with a vigorous hitting performance that's as confounding as it is welcome.

On Thursday night, San Francisco again channeled the 1927 Yankees, with Juan Uribe portraying Babe Ruth. Uribe tucked two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs into a nine-run second inning that awakened the Giants' sleepy offense and propelled them to a 13-0 pasting of the Chicago Cubs.

Read the rest here.

Notes: Tim Lincecum(14-10, 3.60) starts tonight for the Giants againstColorado's Jhoulys Chacin(9-9, 3.30)....The Giants have won 14 of their last 21 and 17 of their last 29 games....Shortstop Juan Uribe went into Thursday's series finale against Chicago struggling to the tune of an .095 average (2-for-21) in his last six games, but he made that all disappear with a huge game. Uribe delivered a grand slam and a two-run homer in San Francisco's nine-run second-inning outburst, all but icing the game on the strength of his own power stroke. Uribe's two homers pulled him within one of equaling his career high of 23, set with the White Sox in 2004. Ten of the veteran's 22 home runs have either tied the game or given the Giants a lead, and he has a career high with 83 RBIs. Uribe has struggled to a .221 (55-for-249) road average, which ranks among the worst of any NL regular....Rookie catcher Buster Posey has 64 RBIs this year, the fifth-highest total for a Giants rookie since 1958. ... The Giants are 60-18 when scoring the first run, and they're 15-1 in their last 16 games in which they score first.
