It was all Shields, all the time, as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 3-0 yesterday, before their third straight sell-out crowd of 36,973 at Tropicana Field.

Kelly Shoppach started the scoring in the second, with a two-out single that plated Willy Aybar, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead. Then, in the third, Reid Brignac scored on Carl Crawford's infield single and B.J. Upton scored as Evan Longoria grounded into a double play, putting Tampa Bay on top, 3-0.

After that, it was up to the Rays' pitching staff to keep New York at bay. James Shields was masterful, fanning the last batter of the third, striking out the side in the fourth, and fanning the first two batters in the fifth. He retired nine straight hitters, before allowing a sixth-inning single to Lance Berkman. His day ended after allowing a one-out single to Derek Jeter. Newly acquired Chad Qualls came out of the bullpen to get Berkman to ground into an inning-ending double play, then closer Rafael Soriano came on to retire the Yankees, allowing just a meaningless single to Nick Swisher, as Tampa Bay finished off the 3-0 victory.

Shields was outstanding for the Rays. In 7 1/3 innings, he allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 11. Qualls recorded his 4th hold of the season, while Soriano pitcked up his 30th save of the season. C.C. Sabathia allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, with 3 strike outs and 3 walks for New York. With the loss, his record slips to 13-5.

The Rays improve to 65-39, closing to within one game of New York in the A.L. East, while remaining first in the A.L. Wild Card chase. Game one of four against the Minnesota Twins, which will wrap up this season-high 11-game homestand, is tonight, starting at 7:10pm EDT. Tuesday's and Wednesday's games are also 7:10pm EDT starts, while Thursday's get-away day game gets underway at 12:10pm EDT. You can follow the Rays on 620AM WDAE and the Rays Radio Network. All games through Friday, September 3rd, can be seen on Sun Sports. The Saturday August 14th game against Detroit will be on FOX.

Notes: Minor-leaguer Jamey Hellickson is expected up from Durham to start tonight's game against the Twins. He will be up just for this game, to give the rest of the staff a bit of a breather. Hellickson has an International League best 12 wins, 2.45 ERA and 123 walks. He also strung together 22 consecutive scoreless innings between May 19th and June 4th. He will be facing a Twins team that 8 games in a row, and 10 of it's last 11. Minnesota is 13 games over .500 for the first time since September 28th, 2008.... Rays' Carlos Pena and Ben Zobrist are feeling better, but are still doubtful for tonights' game....The three games with the Yankees were just the third, fourth and fifth sell-outs of the season and the first since opening day.

Today is the start of Psychic Week. (You knew I was going to say that, didn't you?)

************************************************

The Yankees lead the A.L. East by 1 game over Tampa Bay and 6 1/2 over Boston. Toronto is 12 1/2 back and Baltimore is 34 1/2 games behind.

In the A.L. Central, the White Sox lead Minnesota by 1/2 game, Detroit trails by 7, Kansas City is 14 1/2 games back and Cleveland is 15 1/2 games off the pace.

Out in the (not-so)wild A.L. West, Texas leads the Angels by 8 games, Oakland is 8 1/2 behind, and Seattle(It's official...they stink) is 22 1/2 games behind.

In the N.L. East, Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 2 1/2 games, Florida and the Mets are 6 1/2 back and Washington trails by 13 1/2.

In the N.L. Central, St. Louis leads Cincinnati by 1/2 game, Milwaukee is 11 1/2 behind, the Cubs trail by 13, Houston is 13 1/2 games behind, and Pittsburgh is 22 1/2 games off the pace.

San Diego's lead in the N.L. West is down to 1 1/2 games over San Francisco(The Giants lead the N.L. Wild Card chase). Colorado is 7 behind, the Dodgers trail by 8 and Arizona is 23 games back.

The San Francisco Giants remained 1 1/2 games behind first-place San Diego yesterday, with a series-sweeping 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, before another sell-out crowd of 42,922 at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Edgar Renteria's two-out triple in the sixth, chasing home Pat Burrell and Aaron Rowand was all the scoring on the day. Matt Cain was solid for the Giants, allowing just 4 hits, while fanning 7 and walking 1 in 7 1/3 innings' work, improving his seasons' record to 9-8, while picking up his first career win in 15 tries against the Bums. Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his 31st save. Clayton Kershaw went 7 innings, allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, striking out 6 and walking 4. His record slips to 10-6 for Los Angeles, who has now lost five straight.

San Francisco is now 61-45, and remains 1 1/2 games behind first-place San Diego in the N.L. West. They've won 20 of their last 25 games as well. The Giants are off today, then hit the road for six games, starting with three at Colorado starting tomorrow, followed by three in Atlanta starting Friday, before returning home next Monday for four games with the Cubs and three big games with division-leading San Diego starting next Friday. Next Saturday's game with the Padres airs on FOX, with the Sunday game against San Diego showing on ESPN.

LONG POND, Pa. -- Pocono Raceway has been nothing short of rewarding for Tony Stewart the past six years and Sunday's performance in the Sunoco Red Cross 500 left the driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet with plenty to celebrate.

Stewart, along with race winner Greg Biffle and third-place finisher Carl Edwards, were the big winners in a wild strategic scramble at the end of the race. On the other hand, Sam Hornish Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, along with Juan Montoya, couldn't make pit strategy under the final caution, work to their advantage.

“It was just a matter of figuring out what the pit strategy was going to be at the end. It always comes down to strategy of fuel or weather, it seems like here, which isn't exactly how you want to have to run a race.

With a second-place finish, Stewart moved up one spot in the standings to eighth, just three points behind Kurt Busch, who had a less than stellar day after connecting with Johnson, hitting the inside wall, and dropping two spots in the standings.

Stewart was quick to praise crew chief Darian Grubb and the rest of his team, citing decisions made on pit road near the end of the race as a key factor to the driver's success Sunday. Stewart said his crew gave him the car he needed to compete with Hornish, Edwards and Kevin Harvick near the end.

Pit strategy played a large role for several drivers and their crews during a race that saw two red flags -- one for an accident involving Busch and Elliott Sadler and the other for rain.

Biffle and crew chief Greg Erwin's decision to stick with a two-tire strategy throughout the race eventually led to a trip to Victory Lane for their No. 16 Ford.

After Hornish elected to stay out during the final caution, Biffle and team took two tires to gain track position and were up front for the final restart. Erwin said that both times the No. 16 took two tires, it worked out in their favor, regardless of what it looked like.

Erwin, Biffle and team netted several positions before the next pit cycle, taking the team from third to first.

Gordon, who finished sixth, was leading the race before his last pit stop on Lap 170, and without knowing what the field behind him was going to do, the driver of the No. 24 said he was a "sitting duck."

"If you know if nine guys are going to take two tires, then it is an easy call to take two. But, when you don't know and the guys around you are going to take four, then you take four," Gordon said. "We just weren't really good enough to drive up there like Tony [Stewart] was."

Montoya, who dogged Gordon's tracks late in the race before the final stop, led for the final time on Lap 152, right before Gordon took the lead for a 19-lap stretch. Montoya didn't waste much time letting crew chief Brian Pattie know that he was frustrated with their decision to go with four tires.

Hornish elected to stay out when Gordon pitted, took the lead and said that more laps under caution due to rain may have given him a better chance to stay up front.

"We didn't have a very good car [Sunday], but the one thing we did have was a good car for like, five laps," Hornish said. "I was hoping they would have to run another 10 [laps] under yellow when it was raining. We got the most we could possible get out of it."
