Cole Burkhalter Named Recipient of
USA Hockey's 2010-11 Brendan Burke Internship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey today announced Cole Burkhalter (Knoxville, Tenn.) as the first-ever recipient of the Brendan Burke Internship. He will begin working in the hockey operations department at USA Hockey's national office in Colorado Springs, Colo., in September.

Established earlier this year, the Brendan Burke Internship is awarded annually to a recent college graduate who is pursuing a career in hockey operations. The internship was founded in memory of the late Brendan Burke, who served as a student assistant for the Miami University men's ice hockey team and was the son of Brian Burke, general manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team and the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs. Brendan Burke passed away in an automobile accident on Feb. 5, 2010.

"We're excited to add Cole to our staff," said Jim Johannson, assistant executive director of USA Hockey. "He'll always have the distinction of being the first-ever Brendan Burke Intern and I'm confident he'll do a great job and make the most out of the opportunity."

Burkhalter's responsibilities will vary from working with national teams, international events and player development camps to gaining experience with the American Development Model, National Team Development Program and Coaching Education Program.

Burkhalter served as a hockey operations intern for the Canisius College NCAA Division I men's ice hockey team during the 2009-10 season, while completing his master's degree in sport administration. His main responsibilities included breaking down game film and organizing team travel. He also coached the eighth grade boys' varsity prep hockey team at Nichols School (N.Y.) in 2009-10.

Previously, Burkhalter spent five years teaching kids at all levels as a coach with the Knoxville (Tenn.) Amateur Hockey Asociation, including while he pursued his undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee (2006-08). In addition, he served as an instructor for the Knoxville Ice Bears (Southern Professional Hockey League) Youth Hockey School from 2006-09.

Burkhalter's coaching career began in 2004 at the age of 18, just one year after being sidelined from playing as a result of being diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. He is currently a USA Hockey Level 4 certified coach and is awaiting approval on his completed Level 5 certification.

ANAHEIM -- The Tampa Bay Rays scored all their runs in the first two innings last might, enroute to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels, in front of 39,127 at Angels Stadium.

In the first, B.J. Upton hit the first pitch of the game into the left-field seats. Then with two outs, Ben Zobrist singled to drive home Jason Bartlett and Carl Crawford for a 3-0 lead. In the second, Sean Rodriguez scored on Upton's one-out double, giving Tampa Bay a 4-0 lead.

The Angels rallied for 2 in the third. Bobby Abreu and Alberto Callaspo scored on a two-out double by Hidecki Matsui then, in the bottom of the seventh, Peter Bourjos came home on a Howard Kendrick sacrifice fly, but they could get no closer, as the Rays held on for the 4-3 win.

James Shields was sharp for Tampa Bay, going 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, with 10 strike outs and just 1 walk. The win moves his record to 12-11 and ties him with Scott Kazmnir for most wins in franchise history, at 55. Randy Choate(13), Randy Qualls(8) and Joaquin Benopit(22) all recorded holds, and Rafael Soriano struck out the side in the ninth on just nine pitches for his 38th save. Kazmir was bounced around by his former team, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits, with 4 strike outs and 4 walks in 5 1/3 innings. He's now 8-11.

The Rays are 77-48, and are tied with the Yankees for first in the A.L. East. Boston trails by 5 1/2 games in the Wild Card race. The Rays continue their three-game series against the Angels tonight at 10:05pm EDT, on 620AM WDAE and the Rays Radio Network. After Wednesday's game with the Angels, Tampa Bay returns home Friday night to begin a six game home stand, with three games against Boston and three against Toronto. All games through Friday, September 3rd, can be seen on Sun Sports.

Notes: Soriano is just the 44th pitcher in Major League history to record a save by striking out the side on 9 pitches in the ninth inning....Evan Longoria has been named the American League's co-Player of the week. Over the past week, Longoria hit .393(11-for-26) with 4 doubles, a triple, 3 home runs and 12 RBIs. He also had a slugging percentage of .929. He shares the honor with the Yankees' Robinson Cano....With Wade Davis returning to the roster, reliever Mike Ekstrom has been sent back to Triple-A Durham....Grant Balfour, out for the past 24 games with an intercostal strain, is making progress in his recovery. However, there's still no target date for his return to active duty....Wade Davis(9-9, 4.45) goes to the hill tonight for the Rays. He'll be opposed by the Angels' Ervin Santana(13-8, 3.93).

In the A.L. Central, Minnesota leads the White Sox by 4 1/2 games, they're 10 games ahead of Detroit, with Kansas City 19 back and Cleveland 21 1/2 games behind.

Out in the (not-so)wild A.L. West, Texas leads Oakland by 8 1/2 and the Angels by 9 games, with Seattle trailing by 21 1/2 games.

In the N.L. East, Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 2 1/2 games(The Phillies lead the Wild Card chase), Florida trails by 10 games, the Mets are 10 1/2 behind, and Washington is 20 out.

In the N.L. Central, Cincinnati is 2 1/2 games up on St. Louis(The Cards are 1 game behind in the Wild Card race). Milwaukee is 12 1/2 behind, Houston is 16 1/2 back, the Cubs are 20 1/2 behind and Pittsburgh is 31 games off the pace.

San Diego leads the N.L. West by 5 1/2 games over San Francisco(The Giants trail Philadelphia by 1 game in the N.L. Wild Card chase). Colorado is third, 10 1/2 games out, the Dodgers in fourth, 12 games out, with Arizona behind by 26.

San Francisco -- It didn't take long for the Giants to put a disappointing road trip behind them.

San Francisco exploded for five first-inning runs and never let up, scoring double-digit runs for the 10th time this season in an 11-2 win over the Reds on Monday night at AT&T Park.

Despite the loss, the Reds are 8-2 in their past 10....San Francisco placed right-handed reliever Guillermo Mota on the 15-day DL with IT band syndrome in his left leg. Mota was sent to the D.L. to make room for Cody Ross, who singled and scored in his Giants' debut last night....San Francisco scored 5 in the first inning last night, after scoring just 1 run in their previous 19....The Giants are 64-20 when scoring three or more runs. ...
