If you've followed the Tampa Bay Rays with anything more than just mild interest this year, you've probably learned that it pays to stick around and not give up on them. Last night was the latest example, as the Rays overcame a 5-1 deficit after four innings to beat the Boston Red Sox 6-5 in front of 28,568 at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay grabbed the lead in the first, as Carl Crawford doubled home Ben Zobrist. The Red Sox responded with four in the third to take control of the game. With two outs, Eric Patterson homered to tie the game 1-1. David Ortiz scored on a Kevin Youkilis triple to put Boston up 2-1, Youkilis scored on an Adrian Beltre single to left, then Bill Hall grounded a single up the middle to score Beltre, giving the Red Sox a 4-1 lead. The lead grew to 5-1 in the fourth, as Patterson homered for the second straight inning.

A two-spot in the fifth brought the Rays to within two, at 5-3. Zobrist scored on Evan Longoria's sacrifice fly and Crawford scored on a passed ball. Tampa Bay tied the game with another two-spot in the sixth. With none out, John Jaso plated Sean Rodriguez and Carlos Pena with a single up the middle to tie the game 5-5. And the Rays, seemingly on the way to yet another home loss just three innings earlier, scored the winning run in the seventh, when B.J. Upston scored on Jason Bartlett's sacrifice fly and the comeback was complete. Jaquin Benoit pitched a perfect eighth and Rafael Soriano allowed just a meek single to Ortiz in the ninth and Tampa Bay had the 6-5 win.

Rays starter Matt Garza was shaky, giving up 4 runs, all earned, on 7 hits in 3 innings, with 1 k and 2 walks. The bullpen came through behind him, with Randy Choate getting the win. Choate struck out the only batter he faced, improving to 2-2. Soriano's 9th inning effort notched him his 22nd save of the season. Ramon Ramirez, the second of three Boston relievers to follow starter Daisake Matsuzaka(who allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits with 4 strike outs and 4 walks in 5 innings), was tagged with the loss, allowing a run on 2 hits in an inning and a third, slipping to 0-2.

Tampa Bay is now 48-33 and are back in second in the A.L. East, 1/2 game ahead of Boston and 2 games back of the Yankees. The Rays are home against Boston again tonight, with first pitch set for 7:10pm EDT. You can hear all the action on 620AM WDAE and the Rays Radio Network. Tonight's game can be seen on on Sun Sports. Tampa Bay takes on Boston again tomorrow night, then hosts Cleveland for four starting Thursday, to lead into the All-Star break. After this home stand and the All-Star Break, the Rays head out for nine games, starting with a huge three-game set at the Yankees beginning on Friday, July 17th. Tampa Bay will also play three at Baltimore and three at Cleveland, before returning home on Monday, July 26th for their longest home stand of the season, 11 games, with the first of a four-game set against Detroit, to be followed by three against the Yankees and four against Minnesota.
