Today is National Cancer Survivors Day

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day, and the American Cancer Society is honoring the many survivors who are alive today in part because of our Relay For Life volunteers’ work to raise funds to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back.

When I think about celebrating survivors, I can’t help but think about the emotion-packed survivor laps that start our Relay For Life events across the state. As chairman of the board, it gives me great pride to see so many survivors taking part. As an oncologist, I am encouraged that we are making more advances in treatment that result in more survivors. But most importantly, as the father of a childhood cancer survivor, I am deeply moved to think about the number of people like my daughter who after all the uncertainty that a cancer battle brings have the opportunity to make that special victory lap.

The healing and camaraderie that survivors experience at Relay For Life is one of the reasons more than 100,000 people including over 20,000 survivors took part in our 365 Relay For Life events in Florida this year. Together, we have raised $20 million to advance the fight against cancer.

Thank you for all you do for the American Cancer Society and Relay For Life to create a world with less cancer, more survivors and more birthdays.

Eric Sandler, MD, Chairman
