Monday Morning Meissnervations

It's another Meissner Manic Monday. Here's what's happening....

A tornado touched down yesterday in Billings, Montana. The Rimrock Auto Arena at Metra (pictured) could be a total loss.

Read all about it here. (Article at the linked address also links to several other articles about yesterday's tornado.)

I got my start in hockey broadcasting in this building in 1993 and lived in Billings for three years. My heart and prayers go out to the citizens of Billings and Billings Heights, along with best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

The Tampa Bay Rays could muster just one run on six hits Sunday, losing to the Florida Marlins 4-1, and losing their share of first place in the A.L. East in the process.

The Marlins took the lead in the second, as Mike Ross scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Mike Stanton. Tampa Bay tied the game on a Carl Crawford lead off homer in the fourth. However, that's about all the offense the Rays could produce. Florida regained the lead in the fifth, as Gaby Sanchez tripled home Chris Coghlan. They would add two more runs in the sixth on a Wes Helms home run that also plated Cody Ross. The Marlins cruised home from there to the 4-1 win.

Josh Johnson fanned nine and allowed just the one run and six hits in eight innings of work to improve to 8-2. He's now gome eight straight starts without allowing more than one run. Leo Nunez pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, to record his 15th save of the season. David Price allowed four runs, three earned on six hits with nine strikeouts over six innings, but still took the loss, falling to 10-3. Only 15,374 watched the game in Miami's "Whatever-they're-calling-it-this-week" Stadium.

The Tampa Bay Rays are 42-27 and are in second place in the A.L. East, 1 game behind the Yankees and tied with Boston. The Rays now come home for six games, with three against San Diego and three against Arizona, starting tomorrow.

From http://www.indycar.com
NEWTON, Iowa – Through 15 lead changes and 239 laps at the buzz-saw named Iowa Speedway, it appeared just about anyone on the lead lap could pop to the forefront and prevail in the Iowa Corn Indy 250 presented by Pioneer.

Helio Castroneves, who had inherited the lead on Lap 200 when the No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car of IZOD IndyCar Series points leader and two-time race winner Dario Franchitti slowed – the victim of a gearbox issue? Si.

E.J. Viso, who surprised quite a few by steadily moving from his 19th starting position in the No. 8 PDVSA-Jet Aviation-KV Racing Technology car to be running third? Indeed.

How about Tony Kanaan, whose No. 11 Team 7-Eleven car started a disappointing 15th after topping the combined practice speed chart, but had moved behind his countryman Castroneves? That would have been a safe bet and the one that paid.

Kanaan, who led a total of 119 laps at Iowa the past two years but didn’t finish either time, made the event-record 16th lead change among seven drivers stick. He overtook Castroneves on Lap 140 and went on to post his first victory since June 28, 2008, at Richmond International Raceway (another bullring). He was the seventh driver to win in the eight races.

SONOMA, Calif. -- There are no guarantees in racing until the checkered flag falls, but everyone who was in the middle of Marcos Ambrose's flipped-switch gaffe under caution Sunday in the closing laps of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway were sure he was going to win.

Everyone, that is, except actual race winner Jimmie Johnson. Johnson took advantage of Ambrose mis-timing an attempt to save fuel by switching his No. 47 Toyota's engine off and on while the field circled the 1.99-mile road course under the seventh and final caution with fewer than seven laps remaining.

Read the rest here.
