ST. PETERSBURG -- Now the Rays have company in first place.

Not since April 22 has Tampa Bay shared the top spot in the American League East, but at the end of Sunday afternoon, the Rays found themselves joined by the Yankees.

On Sunday afternoon, the Marlins defeated the Rays, 6-1, at Tropicana Field with 25,442 watching to claim the weekend series by winning two out of three. By losing, Tampa Bay fell to 40-23 on the season, while the Yankees defeated the Astros, 9-5, to move to 40-23, which means they share the best record in the Major Leagues with the Rays.

Read the rest here.

The Tampa Bay Rays, with a record of 40-23 are now tied for first with the Yankees in the A.L. East. hits the road on Tuesday for six games, with three at Atlanta and three against the Marlins. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 7:10pm EDT on 620AM WDAE, the Rays Radio Network and Sun Sports.

In Britain a toad underwent life-saving surgery after it was accidentally stabbed with a garden pitchfork. The toad had a collapsed lung but pulled through and was released back into the wild. (Guess it just wasn't his time to croak.)

The Roughriders dropped their preseason opener to the BC Lions yesterday, 19-17 in front of 29,227 at Mosaic Stadium. Lots of players for both teams got lots of looks in this first of two preseason game. Former Winnipeg quarterback Ryan Diwiddie was impressive in his Rider debut, with 13-of-19 passing for 141 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Rob Bagg and Jason Clermont caught touchdown passes, Luca Congi kicked a fieldgoal and Ryan Elaschuk kicked 2 converts. Sean Whyte's 33-yard field goal 3:17 into the 4th quarter won it for BC. Riders play at Calgary next Sunday against the Stampeders at 3:00pm on 620 CKRM.
