The Tampa Bay Rays continued their free fall from the top of the A.L. East standings last night, with a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres, in front of an intimate Tropicana Field gathering of 14,650.

The Padres scored twice with two outs in the third to take the lead. Chase Headley's single scored Tony Gwynn Jr., then David Eckstein was forced home when Will Venable was hit by a pitch. The Rays came back in the eighth, when John Jaso singled home Jason Bartlett. They missed a golden opprtunity to tie the game, when a Carl Crawford liner that appeared headed to the right field corner, hit Jaso on the foot. In the bottom of the ninth, Carlos Pena led off with a walk, and was replaced by Sean Rodriguez. With one out, Rodriguez was thrown out trying to steal, then B.J. Upton struck out swinging to end the game, saddling Tampa Bay with their 17th loss in their last 29 games.

Mat Latos pitched seven strong innings for San Diego, striking out eight, including the last five he faced, walking just one, while allowing only three hits. He improved to a team-best 8-4. Heath Bell notched his 18th save of the season. Wade Davis allowed two runs on four hits for the Rays, with one strikeout and five walks over 4 1/3 innings. He's now 5-8.

The Tampa Bay Rays are 42-28 and are tied for second place with Boston in the A.L. East, 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees. The Rays play game two of their three game set against San Diego tonight, with first pitch tonight is scheduled for 7:10pm EDT on 620AM WDAE, the Rays Radio Network and Sun Sports. The Arizona Diamondbacks come to town for a three-game series starting Friday. After this homestand, the Rays hit the road for six games, with two at Boston and four at Minnesota, starting next Tuesday.
