Today in Sports History:

1939 - The first U.S. water-ski tournament was held at Jones Beach, on Long Island, New York.

1939 - Joe Louis defeated Max Schmeling in 124 seconds.

1979 - Former WHA teams the Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL. The NHL had expanded to 21 teams.

1979 - Troy Archer (New York Giants) died in a traffic accident.

1990 - Billy Joel became the first rock artist to perform at Yankee Stadium.

1991 - Eric Lindros was selected first overall by the Quebec Nordiques at the 1991 NHL Entry Draft.

2002 - Darryl Kile (St. Louis Cardinals) was found dead in his hotel room.

2003 - Michelle Wie won her first USGA title at the age of 13. She was the youngest person to win any adult USGA event.

The Tampa Bay Rays are 42-27 and are tied for second place with Boston in the A.L. East, 1/2 game behind the Yankees. The Rays start a three-game set against the San Diego Padres tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm EDT on 620AM WDAE, the Rays Radio Network and Sun Sports. The Arizona Diamondbacks then arrive for three games starting Friday. After this homestand, the Rays hit the road for six games, with two at Boston and four at Minnesota, starting next Tuesday.

The Yankees lead the A.L. East. Tampa Bay and Boston are tied for second, 1/2 game behind. Toronto is 5 back and Baltimore is 23 1/2 games behind.

In the A.L. Central, Minnesota leads Detroit by 1 1/2 games, the White Sox by 5, Kansas City is 12 back and Cleveland is 13 1/2 games off the pace.

Out in the (not-so)wild A.L. West, Texas leads the Angels by 3 1/2 games, Oakland is 8 1/2 back and Seattle trails by 13.

In the N.L. East, Atlanta leads the Mets by 2 1/2 games, Philadelphia by 5 1/2, while Florida is 8 1/2 back and Washington is 10 1/2 behind.

In the N.L. Central, St. Louis leads leads Cincinnati by 1 game, the Cubs are 7 games behind, Milwaukee is 9 back, Houston trails by 12 1/2, and Pittsburgh is 13 behind.

San Diego leads San Francisco by 1 1/2 games in the N.L. West, The Dodgers are 2 games behind, Colorado is 4 back and Arizona brings up the rear, 13 games out of first.
