U.S. Men's National Team Blanks Kazakhstan, 10-0,
at 2010 IIHF World Men's Championship

Gilroy Scores Three Goals; Dubinsky Tallies Five Points

COLOGNE, Germany - Matt Gilroy (North Bellmore, N.Y./New York Rangers/Boston Univ.) scored three goals and Brandon Dubinsky (Anchorage, Alaska/New York Rangers) tallied five points (1-4) to lead the U.S. Men's National Team to a 10-0 blanking against Kazakhstan here today in Team USA's first relegation-round game at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Championship.

"It was nice to see the guys score some goals," said U.S. Head Coach Scott Gordon. "Obviously we needed this win and we accomplished what we needed to. We'll get some rest and be ready for France tomorrow."

The U.S. raced to a 4-0 lead after the first period.

T.J. Oshie (Warroad, Minn./St. Louis Blues/Univ. of North Dakota) staked the U.S. to a 1-0 lead just :55 into the contest after sending a wraparound attempt behind Alexi Kuznetsov. Kyle Okposo (St. Paul, Minn./New York Islanders/Univ. of Minnesota) extended Team USA's lead just :18 later when he wristed a shot from the slot past the outstretched glove of Kuznetsov.

While on the power play, Gilroy gave Team USA a 3-0 advantage at 6:53 after cruising down the ice on an end-to-end rush, maneuvering through the Kazakhstan defense and sending a shot from the right faceoff circle past Kuznetsov on the far side. He potted his second of the game at 10:20 when his shot from the goal line went off the far post and into the net.

The U.S. scored five goals, including three power-play markers, in the middle frame to take a 9-0 advantage. Nick Foligno (Buffalo, N.Y./Ottawa Senators) opened the period's scoring at 8:03 when he skated down the left-wing boards, cut toward the slot and sent a backhanded shot past Pavel Zhitkov, who played the final two periods for Kazakhstan.

At 16:34, Ryan Potulny (Grand Forks, N.D./Edmonton Oilers/Univ. of Minnesota) completed a three-way passing play with Keith Yandle (Boston, Mass./Phoenix Coyotes) and Dubinsky while on the power play.

Gilroy recorded his third tally of the game 12 seconds later when he converted on a failed clearing attempt with a slap shot from the right faceoff circle.

Dubinsky gave Team USA an 8-0 lead after scoring on a 5-on-3 advantage at 18:44, while Tim Kennedy (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Sabres/Michigan State Univ.) added a power-play tally of his own with 31 seconds remaining in the period.

In the final frame, Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass./Boston College), the youngest member of Team USA, scored off his own rebound with 1:03 remaining to close out the scoring.

U.S. netminder Scott Clemmensen (Des Moines, Iowa/Florida Panthers/Boston College) turned aside all 23 shots he faced in the first two periods, while Ben Bishop (Des Peres, Mo./Peoria Rivermen/Univ. of Maine) stopped five attempts in the third stanza.

Team USA faces France in its second relegation-round game tomorrow (May 16) at 12:15 p.m. (6:15 a.m. ET). The game can be seen on a tape-delay on Universal Sports and at UniversalSports.com at 3:15 p.m. ET.

The Seattle Mariners built a 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold on, as a determined Tampa Bay Rays club came back for a 3-2 win yesterday afternoon, in front of 23,627 fans at Tropicana Field.

Seattle's Chone Figgins scored in the first on a wild pitch and Mike Sweeney homered in the fourth. The Rays rallied late, scoring twice in the eighth as B.J. Upton scored on a Reid Brignac single and Sean Rodriguez scored on a Ben Zobrist sacrifice fly, then got a walk-off homer from Willy Aybar in the ninth to win the game.

Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth and picked up the win for Tampa Bay, to improve to 2-0. Jesus Colome took the loss for the Mariners, he's now 0-1. Tampa Bay are now 25-11, still one game ahead of the Yankees in the A.L. East. Seattle fell to 14-22, 5 1/2 games behind Texas in the A.L. West.

The Rays and Mariners meet one more time today, first pitch 1:40pm EDT on 620AM WDAE and Sun Sports.

Bossier City, LA – The Tampa Bay Storm (3-3, 0-1) earned a hard-fought, come-from-behind victory on Saturday as they defeated the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (3-3, 0-1) 48-44 at the CenturyTel Center to earn its first victory on the road this season.

Tampa Bay scored a game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter after trailing for most of the contest. Despite Bossier-Shreveport signal caller Raymond Philyaw setting up a pair of late scores in the final quarter, Storm receiver Tyrone Timmons pulled in what proved to be the game’s winning score in the waning seconds. The Storm defense, who lost defensive back Deonte Bolden early in the game with a knee injury, ensured the win on the following series as it thwarted a Bossier-Shreveport comeback attempt by forcing Philyaw to fumble the ball as time expired.

Tampa Bay quarterback Brett Dietz turned in one of the most proficient efforts of his career, as he was nearly perfect in completing 32 of 37 passes for 372 yards and six scores. His primary target on the night was Sedrick Robinson, who led all Storm receivers with 10 catches for 132 yards. DeAndrew Rubin also added 115 receiving yards and a team-high four touchdowns for Tampa Bay. Philyaw finished the night with 230 yards and three touchdowns for Bossier-Shreveport, which received a pair of touchdowns each from PJ Berry and Willis Marshall.

Penalties dominated the game’s opening quarter, including several that proved detrimental to the Storm, who totaled eight infractions for 50 yards in the initial frame. With the offensive driving down the field and receiving its first prime opportunity of the game to open scoring, Tampa Bay was struck with a penalty that moved the ball back to the 23 yard line. The Storm did ultimately reach the endzone, but Dietz’s pass to Timmons was called back due to an additional infraction. Bossier-Shreveport defensive back Nick Ward picked off Dietz’s pass later in the drive, setting up the game’s first score as Philyaw hooked up with Berry to take a 6-0 lead following a missed extra point. Dietz recovered quickly as he connected with Timmons from seven yards out to even the score as the period came to a close.

Bossier-Shreveport’s offense gained momentum in the second quarter after a slow start to begin the contest. Berry pulled in his second touchdown of the night after Philyaw found him in the back of the endzone from the two-yard line. The Battle Wings increased the margin after Robinson fumbled the football, leading to a 30-yard field goal by Nick Gatto to make the score 15-6. Terrence Royal cut the deficit to two when he rushed in his second score of the season. Royal took a handoff from Dietz and broke outside, then cut back to the inside lane and plowed through a Battle Wings defender before crossing the goal line. Bossier-Shreveport responded on its ensuing possession, however, as Byron Douzart scored off a draw play that went for 28 yards before a wide-open Rubin caught a pass from Dietz to close the scoring gap. Gatto attempted another field goal with seconds remaining in the half, but the kick hit off the iron and missed, allowing the Battle Wings to take a 22-20 lead into the intermission.

Tampa Bay enjoyed a reversal of fortune to open the third quarter. Jason Geathers, making his Storm debut, intercepted a pass by Philyaw to set up a second rushing touchdown from Royal, who gave the Storm its first lead of the game. Marshall countered for Bossier-Shreveport as he regained the advantage after taking a pitch from Philyaw and running the ball to the outside and into the paint. The game continued its back and forth trend as the fourth quarter opened, but the Storm gained some momentum with a pair of consecutive scores to take its biggest lead of the night. After recording the tying touchdown, Rubin corralled a pass from Dietz in the endzone that gave the visitors a 34-29 lead. Philyaw would go on to set up two more scores, but Rubin added an additional touchdown on the night and Timmons’ catch with 13 seconds left sealed the come-from-behind victory after erasing a three-point deficit in the game’s final minute en route to the 48-44 win.

DOVER, Del. Kyle Busch put the fans to sleep with a dominant victory Saturday in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Heluva Good! 200 at Dover International Speedway.

But Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer woke them up with a late-race dust-up that sent Bowyer to the garage and the Nationwide Series hauler.

Busch scored his fourth Nationwide victory of the season and 34th of his career by leading all but 14 of the 205 laps as the race ended with a green-white-checkered finish. He never was truly challenged and easily pulled away from the field on the final restart.

"This is just another product of Joe Gibbs Racing and all the guys that work so hard," said Busch, who won from the pole at Dover. "Everybody at the shop does a great job for us. The preparation was there. When we unloaded, we unloaded good. We just tweaked on it. That's what it takes."

Meanwhile, as Busch celebrated in Victory Lane, Bowyer was waiting in the Nationwide hauler to meet with NASCAR officials. On the next-to-last restart, Hamlin punted Bowyer out of second place as the green flag waved. The fracas triggered a nine-car accident and an 11-minute, 43-second red flag.

After the red was lifted, Bowyer drove from pit road and slammed into the side of Hamlin's car, causing it to spin. NASCAR immediately parked Bowyer and sent him to the garage.

"[Our team has] had a frustrating year, bringing home a lot of torn-up racecars," said Bowyer, who replaced John Wes Townley in Richard Childress Racing's No. 21 six races ago. "It is what it is. I don't have a beef with Denny. We'll be fine. I got one taken from me. Just a little payback."

Hamlin has been involved in Nationwide controversy at Dover before, getting together with Brad Keselowski last year. But this time, his reaction was more calm.

"It just didn't have the speed that those guys did, but we tried to make something happen on the restart and got the 21 and the 38 [of Kasey Kahne] there," Hamlin said of his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. "A lot of times when that happens you kind of expect retaliation."

Ryan Newman drove through the crash and finished second to Busch, with Jamie McMurray third. Reed Sorenson was fourth, followed by Braun Racing teammate Jason Leffler.

Kevin Harvick was sixth, with Brad Keselowski seventh to hold on to the points lead by 11 over Busch. Greg Biffle was eighth, with rookies Brian Scott and Colin Braun rounding out the top 10.

Nascar's Sprint Cup Series takes over the Dover track today, coverage begins at 1:00pm EDT on FOX.
