USC escapes determined Beavers squad by 6










The Oregon State Beavers battled all night long, but in the end, USC held the ball and ran out the clock for a 42-36 win over the Beavers at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Trojans led 7-6 after one, getting a 8-yard Matt Barkley to Anthony McCoy touchdown pass, with a Jordan Congdon PAT, to offset two 48-yard field goals from Oregon State's Justin Kahut.

Barkley hit Ronald Johnson with a 22-yard scoring strike and also rushed for a 1-yard score, with Congdon converting both times. Kahut kicked a 33-yard field goal and USC led at the half, 21-9.

Both teams exchanged a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter. Sean Canfield passed 6 yards to Jacquizz Rodgers with Kahut kicking the PAT for the Beavers. Allen Bradford ran it in from 2-yards out, with Congdon converting for the Trojans. Sean Canfield for Oregon State passed 15-yards to Damola Adeniji, with Kahut kicking the point after. Allen Bradford then followed with a 43-yard run for USC and Congdon made the PAT, putting the Trojans up 35-23.

Damian Williams appeared to put a lock on the game for USC, running a Johnny Hekker punt back 63-yards for a touchdown. Congdon kicked the PAT, and USC led 42-23. However, the Beavers roared back. Canfield found James Rodgers with a 7-yard touchdown pass, but missed on the two-point conversion, drawing Oregon State closer, at 42-29. The Beavers got even closer, with Jacquizz Rodgers bulling across the goal line from a yard out with just over 4 minutes remaining in regulation time. Kahut kicked the PAT and the Trojans' lead was down to 6. USC took the kick and proceeded to not only hold onto the ball, but also ran the clock out, holding on for the 42-36 win.

For Oregon State, Sean Canfield was 30-of-43 passing for 319 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jacquizz Rodgers rushed 19 times for 109 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a touchdown pass. Joe Halahuni caught 9 passes for 129 yards, and Damola Adeniji caught a touchdown pass. Justin Kahut kicked 3 field goals for the Beavers. For USC, Matt Barkley was 15-of-25 passing for 202 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Allen Bradford rushed 15 times for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns, Ronald Johnson caught 9 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Anthony McCoy caught a touchdown pass and Damian Williams scored on a punt return. Each team had 24 first downs, Oregon State was 7-15 on 3rd downs and 1-1 on 4th down, while losing 1 fumble and being penalized 9 times for 85 yards. The Trojans were 6-9 on 3rd downs, committed 4 penalties for 45 yards and turned the ball over twice.

The Beavers, who haven't beaten USC in Los Angeles since 1960, are now 4-3 on the season, 2-2 in the Pac-10. The Trojans are 6-1 overall, 3-1 in the Pac-10.

Next up for Oregon State, is their homecoming game on Saturday, October 31st, against the UCLA Bruins, who lost to Arizona 27-13 tonight. Kickoff at Reser Stadium is set for 4:00p.m. with the Beaver Sports Network and http://www.kpam.com/ having the live broadcast. The Beavers beat the Bruins last season 34-8.
