Devils edge Lightning in shootout again

The New Jersey Devils won their second shootout of the season in the St. Pete Times Forum Saturday, winning 2-1 over the Tampa Bay Lightning, in front of 12,154 fans.

After a scoreless first period, Travis Zajac put New Jersey on top 50 seconds into the 2nd period. 4:34 into the third, Steven Stamkos scored his tenth goal of the season, banking the puck off a defenseman's skate and through the five-hole, tying the game for the Lightning 1-1. The Devils, who outshot Tampa Bay 38-19 in the game, outshot the Lightning 4-2 in overtime, but neither team was able to score and the game went to the deciding shootout.

Both goaltenders were solid in the shootout, but a David Clarkson top-shelf backhander in round four won the extra standings point for New Jersey, as they won the game 2-1.

Goaltending was sharp at both ends. Martin Brodeur made 18 saves for the Devils, while Antero Niittymaki made 37 saves for Tampa Bay. Both teams were 1-for-9 on the power play.

The Lightning are now 4-3-3 for 11 points, tied with Atlanta for second in the Southeast, 8 points behind Washington. New Jersey is 7-4-0 for 14 points, good for third in the Atlantic, 3 behind the Rangers and 8 back of Pittsburgh. The Devils are a perfect 6-0-0 on the road this season.

Tampa Bay travels to Philadelphia for a matchup with the Flyers on Monday, November 2nd. Faceoff is at 5:00p.m. EST. WDAE has the radio call, Sun Sports the telecast.
