Kahut boots Beavers past Arizona

Justin Kahut's 24 yard field goal on the last play of the game atoned for an earlier missed extra point and gave the Oregon State Beavers their sixth straight win, a 19-17 win over the Arizona Wildcats in Pac-10 action Saturday night.

Kahut's career best 47 yard field goal on the final play of the first half, matched the Wildcats Jason Bondzio, who kicked a 27 yarder just past the midway point of the second quarter, tying the game 3-3 at halftime.

James Rodgers, picking up the offensive slack after an injury forced little brother Jacquizz out of the game in the first quarter, scored on a 7 yard run. Kahut converted and the Beavers led 10-3, with 8:54 remaining in the third. Arizona tied the game with 16 seconds remaining in the third, as Rob Gronkowski scored on a 16 pass from Willie Tuitama. Bondzio's PAT knotted the score at 10-10.

The Wildcats took the lead at the 8:26 mark of the fourth, on a 9 yard run by Keola Antolin. Bondzio kicked the extra point, giving Arizona a 17-10 lead. Oregon State responded, marching down the field for the apparent tying score, as Sean Canfield, subbing for injured quarterback Lyle Moevao, hit Sammie Stroughter with a 7 yard touchdown pass. However, Kahut sailed the convert wide left, leaving the Beavers down a point at 17-16, with 3:58 remaining. Oregon State's defense stiffened and got the ball back for the offense at their own 20, with no timeouts and just 79 seconds remaining. Canfield, running the no-huddle offense to perfection, found tailback Jeremy Francis twice for gains of 20 yards five yards, then fired a 47 yard strike to Stroughter, giving the Beavers a first down at the Wildcats 7 with less than a minute remaining. Ryan McCants, who had 49 of his 52 yards rushing in the second half, carried the ball to the Arizona 3. The Wildcats called timeout to set their defense, but Canfield took the snap and downed the ball between the hash marks at the 7 yard line, setting up Kahut's game-winning attempt. The sophomore kicker from Clackamas High then made up for his earlier missed PAT, with a perfect kick from 24 yards out, giving Oregon State the 19-17 win.

The Beavers had the edge in total offense, 390 to 297. Canfield was 20 of 32 passing for 224 yards and 1 touchdown. Stroughter caught 5 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown and James Rodgers rushed 10 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Freshman punter Johnny Hekker had another strong game, averaging 43.4 yards on five kicks, a long of 50 and downing the ball twice inside the 20. For Arizona, Tuitama was 16 of 22 passing for 158 yards and a touchdown, while Antolin rushed 25 times for 114 yards and one score. Neither team turned the ball over.

The win was Oregon State's six straight, eighth in nine games, and improved their record to 7-1 in the Pac-10, 8-3 overall. The Beavers host the Oregon Ducks in the annual Civil War game this coming Saturday at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Kickoff is set for 6:00p.m. CST. The game can be seen on the Versus Network and heard on http://www.kpam.com.
